Runway vs Descript: Generate New Footage or Edit It?
Both get called AI video tools, but they meter different work. Runway makes shots nobody filmed and bills credits for every second it generates. Descript cuts recordings you already have through their transcript and meters every minute you bring in. This page counts typical monthly loads in each tool’s own unit.

The short answer
Choose Runway if the shot you need was never filmed: Standard at $12 a month covers under a minute of Gen-4.5 footage, and more than about three minutes a month points to Max. Choose Descript if you are cutting speech you already recorded, such as podcasts or lessons: Hobbyist at $16 per person handles up to 10 hours of raw recording a month.
Runway or Descript: which one, when?
Pick by whether the footage exists yet
In shortA shot nobody filmed points to Runway; a recording that needs cutting points to Descript.
Runway for concept and social footage
Showing an idea as moving footage before a production budget is committed, or producing variations of one scene without a reshoot, is the work its per-second pricing is built for.
Descript for podcasts, interviews and lessons
Transcription in 25 languages on every plan, speaker labels for eight or more voices and Rooms sessions metered once make long, speech-led recordings cheap to edit.
Runway Max or Descript Business for delivery-grade projects
Max at $76 a month on annual billing adds mezzanine formats and 500GB of storage; Business at $50 per person adds Brand Studio and dubbing into 30+ languages for localised versions.
Six everyday jobs, side by side

| If the job is… | Runway | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| Create a 5-second shot that was never filmed | 60 credits per Gen-4.5 take (5 x 12), repeated for every retake | Generated video on Creator draws on the AI-credit budget |
| Cut a 45-minute interview | No transcript editing; Runway works on the image | Delete words in the transcript; one import uses 45 media minutes |
| Clean up sound on a recording | Generate Speech creates a new voice track; this differs from repairing an existing recording | Studio Sound, capped at 30 credits per file |
| Deliver a 4K file | Upscale of 720p output on Standard and higher, unlimited on Pro | 4K export on Creator and Business |
| Deliver from the free plan | Watermarked video from 125 one-time credits | 720p watermarked video; audio export without a length limit |
| Scale up the work | 5, 15 or 20 parallel generations on Standard, Pro and Max | Up to 3 seats on Creator and 5 on Business, each adding to a shared pool |

What does each one do to a video?
In shortRunway works on the picture: it makes or changes frames. Descript works on the words: the transcript is the edit.
Six differences that decide it
- Core job
- Runway generates footage that does not exist yet from text or image prompts and alters footage you own; Descript edits existing recordings through their transcript, so deleting a word cuts it from the audio or video. Source: help.descript.com
- Billing unit
- Runway spends credits per second of generated video, 12 per second on Gen-4.5; Descript meters media minutes for everything you upload or record, plus a separate AI-credit budget for Studio Sound, Underlord and AI speech. Source: help.runwayml.com
- Worked example
- On annual billing, Runway Standard at $12 a month buys about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video (625 credits / 12), while Descript Hobbyist at $16 handles 600 minutes of raw recording, about 13 imports of a 45-minute interview (600 / 45). Source: runway.com
- Free access
- Both free plans are permanent. Runway Free gives 125 credits once for the models available to that Free account, and free users cannot buy more; Descript Free renews 60 media minutes every month but grants its 100 AI credits only once. Source: help.runwayml.com
- Output
- Gen-4.5 renders 720p and reaches 4K only as an upscale on paid Runway plans, with ProRes or PNG sequences on Max; Descript exports 1080p without a watermark on Hobbyist and 4K on Creator and Business, and audio export length is unlimited on every plan. Source: descript.com
- Leftover allowance
- Runway Standard and Pro credits reset at renewal, while Max carries up to one month forward; Descript media minutes and AI credits never roll over, but Creator and Business can buy one-time top ups. Source: help.descript.com
Can Runway edit a video?
Yes, on the image. Its profile lists extending and altering footage you own, background removal, cleanup and 4K upscaling, and Standard and higher add a plugin that places Runway output on a Premiere Pro, After Effects or DaVinci Resolve Studio timeline. Cutting a long recording by its words is not among the features its sources describe; for that job Descript is the tool built around it.

What does a month of video work use in each tool’s meter?
In shortRunway counts the seconds it generates, retakes included. Descript counts the minutes you bring in, plus a second budget for its AI tools. Count your month in those units before you compare prices.
The units, row by row
| Work | Runway | Descript |
|---|---|---|
| One second of generated video | 12 credits on Gen-4.5 | On Creator, paid from AI credits; a per-second rate is not covered in the sources checked |
| A retake | Spends the credits again | A re-import counts its media minutes again |
| Import or record one minute of footage | Not covered in the sources checked; storage is capped at 5GB to 500GB by plan | 1 media minute |
| Clean up the sound of one file | Not covered in the sources checked | Studio Sound: at most 30 AI credits |

Five monthly loads, counted
In shortReal monthly work, each tool’s own meter. Where a job is not one the tool’s sources describe, the cell says so.
| Load | Runway credits | Descript minutes and AI credits |
|---|---|---|
| A weekly 45-minute podcast: four episodes, one import each, Studio Sound on each file | Not a Runway job: transcript editing and sound repair are not covered in its sources | 180 minutes (4 × 45) and at most 120 credits (4 × 30): inside Hobbyist’s 600 minutes and 400 credits; Free’s 60 minutes hold one episode |
| Four one-hour remote interviews with five people each, recorded in Rooms | Not covered in the sources checked | 240 minutes (4 × 60); five separate one-hour tracks per interview would be 1,200 (4 × 5 × 60) |
| A new 5-second generated intro for each of the four episodes, three takes per intro | 720 (4 × 3 × 60): over Standard’s 625, inside Pro’s 2,250 | On Creator, paid from AI credits at a rate not covered in the sources checked |
| A 60-second concept trailer cut from twelve 5-second shots | One take each: 720 (12 × 60). Three takes each: 2,160 (12 × 3 × 60), inside Pro’s 2,250 with 90 to spare | Not covered in the sources checked |
| The same trailer, one take each, rendered as ProRes on Max | 1,020 (60 seconds × 17 credits): inside Max’s 9,500 | Not covered in the sources checked |
Arithmetic on the per-second, per-file and per-session rates on each profile: Gen-4.5 at 12 credits a second, ProRes adding 5, Studio Sound capped at 30 credits a file, one media minute per minute imported. Take counts are assumptions; change them to yours.
The podcast month shows why the units matter. The edit sits well inside Descript Hobbyist, but a fresh three-take intro every week outgrows Runway Standard and needs Pro. Generating one intro and reusing it, 180 credits once, keeps the Runway side on Standard.
What each plan holds, in output terms
| Plan | Monthly allowance | In output terms |
|---|---|---|
| Runway Free | 125 credits, once | About 10 seconds of Gen-4.5 (125 / 12) |
| Runway Standard | 625 credits | About 52 seconds |
| Runway Pro | 2,250 credits | About 187 seconds |
| Runway Max | 9,500 credits | About 790 seconds, roughly 13 minutes |
| Descript Free | 60 media minutes; 100 AI credits, once | One 45-minute recording |
| Descript Hobbyist | 10 media hours; 400 AI credits | About 13 recordings of 45 minutes (600 / 45) |
| Descript Creator, per seat | 30 media hours; 800 AI credits | 40 recordings of 45 minutes (1,800 / 45) |
| Descript Business, per seat | 40 media hours; 1,500 AI credits | About 53 recordings of 45 minutes (2,400 / 45) |
Price per month on yearly billing, from the Runway profile. Bars compare plans of this tool only.
Runway’s bars are monthly equivalents on yearly billing, priced per account. Descript prices each editor seat separately; its plan prices are in the live table at the top of the page. Seconds assume one usable take; recordings assume one import each.

What does each one ask you to accept?
In shortEach tool’s strength comes with a cost to plan for.
Strengths and limits, side by side
| Runway | Descript | |
|---|---|---|
| Costing a job before you start | A published rate per second on Gen-4.5; every retry spends credits again | Studio Sound and filler-word removal cap at 30 credits a file; Underlord has no fixed price per request |
| Paying for a team | Plans are priced per account; seat terms are not covered in the sources checked | Each editor pays the per-person price; media allowances pool across the drive |
| Work it suits less | Footage with recognisable people, trademarks or material you did not create needs a rights check, and commercial use depends on plan terms | Edits driven by image and rhythm, such as music videos, gain little from the transcript |
| Features tied to a plan | The free model selection may change; ProRes and image sequences need Max | Voice cloning from Hobbyist; timeline export from Creator, not yet for Sequences or Avatars; dubbing on Business |
| Fixing a mistake | Extend or alter a shot instead of reshooting it | Media cut from the transcript can be restored |

Common questions
Runway vs Descript price: which is cheaper for video editing?
Runway Standard is cheaper on entry sticker price: $12 a month billed annually ($15 monthly) against $16 per person ($24 monthly) for Descript Hobbyist. The plans buy different things, though. Runway's 625 credits cover about 52 seconds of generated Gen-4.5 video, while Descript's 10 media hours cover recorded editing for one person, and every extra editor pays the seat price again.
Can Descript generate video, and can Runway edit a recording?
Yes, the products overlap beyond their main workflows. Descript has generative video and avatars within its AI allowance, while Runway can alter existing footage and generate speech from a script. Choose by the operation you need: repairing a recorded sentence through its transcript differs from synthesizing a new voice track or shot.
What can I publish from the free plans?
Every video generated on Runway Free carries a Runway watermark, and the free model selection may change. Descript Free exports video at 720p with a watermark, while audio exports have no length limit, so a podcast episode can be published without paying. Descript Free also transcribes in 25 languages, the same as paid plans.
Is either tool's 4K a native render?
Descript Creator and Business export 4K from your own footage. Runway Gen-4.5 renders clips of 2 to 10 seconds at 720p, and the 4K option on Standard and higher adds detail by upscaling after generation, unlimited on Pro. Check whether a client spec accepts upscaled footage before planning around Runway 4K.
What happens when the allowance runs out mid-month?
Runway Free users cannot buy credits, so more generation means a paid plan; paid plans refill at renewal. Descript Creator and Business can buy top ups from the Usage tab that add minutes or credits for one-time use, shared across the drive, without changing the subscription.
How do Runway and Descript serve different video tasks?
Runway makes video that was never filmed, while Descript edits video and audio you already recorded. Runway generates shots from text or image prompts and bills credits per second of output, 12 per second on Gen-4.5. Descript cuts recordings by deleting words in the transcript and meters the media minutes you import. Pick by whether the footage exists yet.
What this page does not judge
Whether Runway’s footage looks real, how accurate Descript’s transcripts are, how long generation queues run and which tool is easier to learn are what many comparisons rank on, but neither profile documents them in a way we can check. We have not generated or edited the same project in both, so this page compares what each one counts and delivers. The check below measures it on your own material.
Take a 10-minute recording you own and one shot your script needs. In Descript Free, import the recording once, cut three sentences in the transcript and apply Studio Sound, then note the media minutes and AI credits used. In Runway Free, generate the shot as a 5-second clip with a model your account offers; 125 credits cover two Gen-4.5 takes. Export both and compare the watermark and resolution with your delivery spec.
How this comparison was made
Plans, units and limits come from the Runway and Descript profiles on this site, which cite the vendors’ pricing and help pages and carry their own check dates; tables marked as live are read from those profiles each time the page loads. Sections follow the topics the pages ranking for this search cover, limited to what the vendors document. No rating is given. See our editorial policy.
