Bottom line

Basic plan

Per the credit guide: 100 Agent credits a month and up to 4 parallel Agent tasks. The Chat PDF page says that tool is free to use; Basic limits for other standalone tools were not shown on the pages read.

Choose SciSpace if

You mostly ask questions about papers you already have, since the Chat PDF tool is described as free and credits only meter Agent tasks.

Skip it if

You expect the free Basic plan to run long research drafts, because 100 monthly credits fall short of the 217-credit sample drafting task.

Strengths, limits and who it suits, in full

Strengths

  • Checkable answers Clickable citations to the page and sentence make it quick to open the passage behind an answer.
  • Free entry point Basic costs $0 with 100 Agent credits a month, and the Chat PDF page says that tool is free to use.
  • Published credit examples The credit guide shows sample tasks from 24 to 217 credits, which helps estimate whether 1,200 credits are enough.

Limits

  • Credit costs are only illustrative The guide says actual consumption varies by query, so the sample figures are not a quote.
  • Advanced monthly is not unlimited Bought monthly at $90, Advanced has 10,000 credits; only the yearly plan lists unlimited usage.
  • A cited answer can still be wrong The citation shows a source passage; it does not check that the answer keeps the paper's scope and limits.

Who it suits

  • Students and researchers reading papers they can check the Chat PDF page links each answer to the page and sentence it used, which helps when you know the paper well enough to judge the passage.
  • Users who need many long Agent tasks each month the credit guide's sample drafting task used 217 credits, so Basic's 100 credits will not cover it and Premium's 1,200 run out after a handful.
  • Not for teams that want mixed tiers on one bill The credit guide says one team plan must be all Premium, all Advanced or all Max; mixed seats need separate plans.

A flash sale ending 7 Oct 2026 and a 30% yearly coupon listed in the pricing FAQ are promotions and are not included. Monthly credits do not roll over; add-on credits do not expire, but no add-on price was shown. The manuscript editor (Typeset) has separate plans not covered by Premium. Taxes were not shown.

How far does it go?

  • Six drafting tasks a month on PremiumThe credit guide's illustrative request to draft an introduction and methods section used 217 credits. Basic's 100 monthly credits cannot cover one. Premium's 1,200 cover five (1,085 credits) with 115 left, so a sixth pauses until you upgrade; the pages read show no add-on credit price. That is Premium at $20 billed monthly or $12 a month billed annually. The guide calls its figures illustrative and says real use varies by query.

Chat with PDF: answers with clickable citations to the page and sentence used; PDFs up to 100 MB, several at once (Chat PDF page)—
SciSpace Agent for multi-step search, summary and drafting tasks, metered in monthly credits (credit guide)The credit guide says credits power tasks inside SciSpace Agent, and standalone tools outside the Agent do not consume credits. A long task that runs out of credits pauses and asks you to upgrade.Chat with PDF on a paid plan is listed as unlimited, so the credit balance matters mainly for Agent tasks.

Parallel task limitsThe credit guide lists 4 parallel tasks on Basic and Premium, 8 on Advanced and 16 on Max; new requests wait until one finishes.Parallel slots are about waiting time, not total monthly capacity.

Do you need the Agent or only the PDF chat?

SciSpace sells two different kinds of capacity. The credit guide says credits pay for tasks run inside SciSpace Agent, such as multi-step searches, summaries and drafts. Standalone tools outside the Agent do not use credits. If your work is mostly asking questions about papers you already have, the credit allowance may matter less than the access rules for the PDF tool, which the Chat PDF page describes as free to use.

If you plan to hand SciSpace whole research requests, estimate credits first. The guide’s sample tasks range from 24 credits for summarising one pre-print to 217 for drafting an introduction and methods section. It calls these figures illustrative, so treat them as a rough scale rather than a price list.

Monthly or yearly billing changes the Advanced limit

On the pricing page Advanced and Max show unlimited monthly usage, but those cards are yearly prices. The credit guide adds that Advanced bought monthly comes with 10,000 credits instead. If you want to try Advanced for one month before committing, the cap still applies. Credits reset each billing cycle and do not roll over; a task that runs out pauses until you upgrade.

The pricing FAQ offers a 24-hour full refund window for Premium and Advanced and says credits are not refundable. The manuscript editor is a separate product: its plan page says editor plans are different from SciSpace Premium, so a Premium subscription should not be expected to cover formatted journal downloads.

Check the passage, not only the link

Each answer links to a page and highlighted sentence. That makes checking fast, but the link only shows where the text came from. A study can report an effect for one subgroup, one dose or one time point, and a short answer can drop that limit. Read the full sentence and the paragraph around it before you quote the answer.

The Chat PDF page also says files are kept private, are not used for model training and are purged after 30 days of inactivity. Check your institution’s rules before uploading unpublished data or participant records.

Evaluate one paper with a known answer

Proposed evaluation, not performed: use the free Chat PDF tool and an open-access paper you have already read closely. No paid plan or confidential file is needed.

  1. Write three questions in advance: one exact method detail, one stated limitation and one fact the paper does not report.
  2. Ask each question about that paper only and open every citation it returns.
  3. Check the method and limitation answers against the cited sentence, including numbers, units and the population studied.
  4. For the missing fact, accept only an answer that says the paper does not report it. A confident invented answer is a failure.
  5. Record the file version, the account plan and whether every citation opened the right passage.

The result tells you whether the tool fits your reading process for that kind of paper. It does not measure accuracy across a field or replace a systematic-review protocol.

Is SciSpace worth it?

Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.

Worth it if

  • You mostly ask questions about papers you already have, since the Chat PDF tool is described as free and credits only meter Agent tasks.
  • You want to open the exact passage behind each answer, because citations jump to the page and highlighted sentence in your PDF.
  • You plan heavy Agent use and accept yearly billing on Advanced, or pay for Max, the tiers that list unlimited monthly usage.

Probably not if

  • You expect the free Basic plan to run long research drafts, because 100 monthly credits fall short of the 217-credit sample drafting task.
  • You want a one-month trial of unlimited Advanced, because the $90 monthly option is capped at 10,000 credits.
  • You need journal formatting in the same subscription, because the manuscript editor is sold on separate plans from Premium.

Frequently asked questions

Is SciSpace free?

Partly. Basic costs $0 and the credit guide gives it 100 Agent credits a month with up to 4 parallel tasks. The Chat PDF page says that tool is free to use. A single long Agent task can need more than 100 credits, and Basic limits for other standalone tools were not shown on the pages read on 7 October 2026.

Does SciSpace have a student discount?

The pricing pages read on 7 October 2026 showed no separate student plan. The pricing FAQ listed a 30% coupon on yearly plans, described as a way to make science more accessible. Coupons and flash sales can change at any time, so check the price shown at checkout rather than relying on a quoted discount.

Can SciSpace read papers behind a paywall?

Only copies you can already access. The Chat PDF FAQ says it can cite pay-walled PDFs that you upload yourself, linking to the page and sentence. The pricing page lists unlocking eligible full-text papers through your institution as a Premium feature, so access depends on your library's subscriptions, not on SciSpace.

Which files can I upload to SciSpace Chat PDF?

Only PDF documents, up to 100 MB per file, according to the Chat PDF FAQ read on 7 October 2026. PowerPoint, Word and video uploads are described as planned, not available. You can ask questions across several PDFs in one conversation and keep uploaded files in a library.
