What is Perplexity used for?

Perplexity is an AI search service: you ask a question in plain language and it assembles an answer from web sources, attaching links to the pages it drew on. That citation habit is the product’s whole point. Its search-and-source workflow is a focus of this profile; other assistants can also retrieve and cite web information. The approach is described in the official help centre.

That makes it a good starting point for a question you cannot answer from memory, and a poor ending point for one that matters. A source link tells you where a sentence came from; it does not tell you that the sentence is right, or that the page still says what it said last year. The useful skill is reading the answer as a map of where to look next.

This profile carries no accuracy score. We have not run a measured comparison of its answers against other tools, and we say so rather than implying a test we did not do — the approach is set out in our editorial policy.

Where it fits in a workflow

• Getting oriented: working out what the first questions even are, and which sources deserve a full read.
• Source scanning: seeing which pages a set of claims rests on, without opening twenty tabs by hand.
• Narrowing a question: moving from “what are the options” toward a specific product, date or number.
• Checking your own draft: asking what a claim rests on before you publish it.

A research question carries context. Instead of “which tool is best?”, state the budget, the task and the criteria you are judging by, and say which details you need verified. A question that specifies its own constraints gets an answer you can act on; a vague one gets a summary of the internet.

Plans and limits

Perplexity offers standard use alongside a paid Pro subscription. The official Pro documentation describes wider access to research features, increased file uploads and a choice of AI models.

Official help pages were readable in our September 23 source review, but the consumer Pro page did not expose a usable subscription price. We therefore retain an unknown price rather than using API rates or third-party reporting to fill the gap.

One page we could reach is the developer API pricing documentation, but that covers a different product: per-token API access for building software, not the consumer subscription described here. Do not use it to estimate what Pro costs you.

A feature appearing on Pro does not mean every mode or model within it is unlimited. Starting on standard use and watching whether it already covers your task is a cheaper first step than subscribing to find out.

A first task to try

The query below is written to expose the gap between a confident answer and a supported one. No test result is being reported here.

“What criteria should a small content team use when choosing AI tools? Prioritise the providers’ official documentation. Where you cannot confirm a price, say so instead of guessing. For each suggestion, state which need it addresses and which details I should verify myself.”

Then do the part most people skip. Pick three claims from the answer, open the source behind each one, find the passage, and check the date on the page. Where the answer is more confident than its source, correct it in your notes. That single habit turns a generated answer into the start of research rather than a shortcut around it.

Should you choose Perplexity?

Choose it when your bottleneck is finding and verifying — mapping an unfamiliar topic, tracing claims to pages, checking what a draft rests on. The citation model earns its place there.

Choose something else when your bottleneck is producing. If the work is turning a brief into a draft or reshaping long copy, a writing-first assistant such as Claude fits the job better. Before you commit

Check the data and file settings on your account before you upload private documents or personal information. Treat fluency as a style, not as evidence: an answer that reads well and an answer that is right are different properties, and only one of them is visible at a glance.

Do not hang an important decision on a single generated answer. Read the sources directly, and prefer primary documentation over any summary of it — including ours.
