Claude vs ChatGPT: Plans, Limits and What Each One Adds

At USD 20 a month the two cost the same, so the choice turns on what comes with the subscription. Claude includes a coding tool and long-document work; ChatGPT adds images, desktop voice and scheduled tasks. This page sets out the plans, the usage limits and the features each one adds, from the vendors’ own pages.

The short answer

Choose Claude if coding and writing should share one subscription, since Claude Code comes with Pro, if you work through long documents, or if you want Pro at about USD 17 a month on the annual plan. Choose ChatGPT if you also need images, desktop voice and scheduled tasks, or a cheaper paid tier (Go, EUR 8 a month in Germany). Heavy use costs USD 100 a month on both.

Claude or ChatGPT: which one, when?

Pick by the work you do

In shortWriting plus code points to Claude; a week that mixes drafts, images and voice points to ChatGPT.

Claude for writers who also code

One Pro or Max login covers chat, Research and Claude Code in the terminal or IDE, so a writer who also ships code pays once; only building on the Claude API needs a separate Console account.

ChatGPT for mixed media in one account

When a week mixes drafts, images, voice notes and recurring reports, one ChatGPT account and its projects hold all of it; projects are available subject to account and workspace conditions, including Free; Plus expands research access and includes scheduled tasks.

Either for a small team, decided by the work

Claude Team serves 2 to 150 people and ChatGPT Business needs at least two seats; both add Premium seats with five times a Standard seat's usage, so pick by the individual strengths above.

What does each cost, and how far do the limits go?

Six differences in billing, limits and output

In shortClaude can be paid yearly; ChatGPT’s individual plans are monthly only.

Billing term
Claude Pro can be paid yearly at USD 200, about USD 17 a month; ChatGPT Go, Plus and Pro are billed monthly only, and OpenAI keeps annual billing for Business seats. Source: claude.com
Worked example
For one person over twelve months, annual Claude Pro costs USD 200 against USD 240 for ChatGPT Plus (12 x USD 20); one step up, Claude Max 5x and ChatGPT Pro $100 both cost USD 1,200 a year (12 x USD 100) for 5x the base plan's usage. Source: help.openai.com
Free access
Claude Free includes web search, file creation, code execution, Artifacts and up to five projects; ChatGPT Free gives unlimited text chats with the basic model but limits uploads, image generation and deep research. Source: chatgpt.com
Usage limits
Claude's paid allowance resets every five hours inside a weekly cap, and Max sells 5x or 20x Pro's per-session usage; ChatGPT's 20x tier, Pro $200, has been closed to new sign-ups and upgrades since September 10, 2026, so a new individual subscriber tops out at Pro $100. Source: support.claude.com
Main capability gap
Claude Pro adds Claude Code for the terminal and IDEs and reaches a context window of up to 1M tokens on the newest models; ChatGPT adds image generation, desktop voice and scheduled tasks to the same account. Source: support.claude.com
Output and export
Claude builds Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files on every plan and opens larger pieces as editable Artifacts beside the chat; ChatGPT creates documents, presentations, spreadsheets and PDFs in ChatGPT Work on the web. Source: support.claude.com

How the usage limits work

In shortNeither paid plan is unlimited; the higher tiers raise the ceiling.

Claude measures paid use in sessions: the allowance resets every five hours, inside a weekly cap. Max 5x and Max 20x multiply Pro’s per-session allowance, and even Max 20x keeps both the session and the weekly limit. Per unit of usage, Max 20x costs about half what Max 5x does, because it gives four times the allowance for twice the price.

ChatGPT Free has no cap on text chats with its basic model but limits uploads, images, voice and deep research. Plus raises those limits, and Pro $100 gives five times the Plus allowance at five times the price, so the cost per unit stays about the same. A Business Premium seat has no five-hour limit.

What does each add beyond chat?

In shortClaude adds a coding tool and room for long material; ChatGPT adds images, voice and tasks that run on a schedule.

What the subscription does not cover

In shortA Claude or ChatGPT subscription pays for the apps, not for building on the API.

Claude Pro and Max cover the apps and Claude Code; the Claude API is billed separately at API rates through a Console account, and an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY set on your computer switches Claude Code to those rates. On ChatGPT, features reach accounts by plan, platform, region and workspace settings, so a feature listed for your plan can still arrive later.

Common questions

Which is cheaper, Claude or ChatGPT?

Month to month they cost the same: USD 20 for Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus. Over a year Claude is cheaper at USD 200 paid up front, because Plus has no annual option and totals USD 240. The lowest paid entry is ChatGPT Go, which may show ads; OpenAI lists it at EUR 8 a month in Germany and shows local prices elsewhere.

What does heavy daily use cost on each?

Claude Max 5x is USD 100 a month and Max 20x USD 200, both monthly only. ChatGPT Pro $100 matches the 5x level at USD 100. A single ChatGPT user who needs more than Pro $100 can move to Business, but a workspace needs at least two seats: one Premium plus one Standard seat costs USD 120 a month billed annually (USD 150 monthly).

Do both search the web and cite sources?

Yes, both include web search with citations on their free plans. Deeper research differs by plan: Claude's Research needs Pro and can also read connected Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs, while ChatGPT's deep research is limited on Free and has its largest allowance on Pro $100.

Is my writing used to train the models?

On Claude Free, Pro and Max, training is a setting you can switch off, and Claude Team and Enterprise do not train on your content by default. ChatGPT Business does not train on business data by default. Check the setting on your own account before uploading client material.

Can I use either one on my phone?

Yes, with differences. Claude runs on the web, desktop, iOS and Android under one account, but on mobile you can only view artifacts; templates, editing and sharing settings need the web or desktop app. ChatGPT also has iOS and Android apps for chat, files and search; its newer ChatGPT Voice experience is built for the desktop app and reaches iOS through Remote, where the phone controls a paired computer.

Should I use Claude or ChatGPT to edit drafts?

Use Claude when you want a longer draft open as an editable Artifact beside the chat, with project instructions applied to every chat in the project and Word or PDF export on every plan. Use ChatGPT when the draft shares one project with images, voice notes and reference files. Both handle drafting and revision from a brief on free and paid plans; Claude Free allows up to five projects.

What this page does not judge

Most pages ranking for this comparison run coding, writing and reasoning tests or quote benchmark scores. We have not run those tests, and results shift with each model release, so this page compares what the plans include rather than which answers are better. The test below compares answers on your own work.

Proposed evaluation, not performed:

Pick three tasks from your real week, such as one draft from a brief, one summary of a long PDF and one small coding or spreadsheet job. Run each on the free plan of both, with the same prompt and files. Keep the answers side by side, mark every fact you had to correct, and note where a free limit stopped you.

How this comparison was made

Plans, limits and prices come from the Claude and ChatGPT profiles on this site, which cite Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s pricing and help pages and carry their own check dates; tables marked as live are read from those profiles each time the page loads. Sections follow the topics the top-ranking pages cover, limited to what the vendors document. No rating is given and no price is converted. See our editorial policy.
