How far does it go?
- One heavy user moving to BusinessA workspace needs at least two seats, so one Premium plus one Standard seat costs USD 100 + USD 20 = USD 120 a month billed annually, or USD 125 + USD 25 = USD 150 billed monthly, against USD 100 for Pro $100.
- The smallest Business workspaceTwo Standard seats cost 2 x USD 25 x 12 = USD 600 a year on monthly billing, or 2 x USD 20 x 12 = USD 480 on annual billing, a saving of about USD 120.
- Pro $100 against PlusPro $100 costs 5 times the Plus price for 5x the Plus usage, so the price per unit of usage is about the same; a year of Plus is 12 x USD 20 = USD 240, and the upgrade buys capacity and Pro reasoning rather than a discount.

Key features
| Feature | What it does | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Summarize and compare supplied files | Upload PDFs, spreadsheets or documents and ask for a summary or a side-by-side comparison; upload limits depend on the plan. | — |
| Organize chats, files and instructions in projects | Keep related chats, files, instructions and sources together; project instructions apply across the project's chats. | A ChatGPT project has no direct access to folders on your computer; that needs a local project in the desktop app. |
| Search the web with source links | Web search answers link to the pages they draw on, and research can run across several sources.Citations sit next to the answer, and deep research works through many sources in several steps before it reports back. | Deep research is limited on Free, and a cited page may not support the exact sentence it is attached to. |
| Image generation | Generate or edit images from a text prompt, optionally guided by an attached reference image.Images can be generated or edited in a chat, and generated images can be reviewed in focused or canvas views with comments on specific images. | Image availability and usage limits in ChatGPT web depend on the plan and workspace settings. |
| ChatGPT Voice | The newer desktop voice experience: talk through ideas and start or check tasks by voice in the ChatGPT desktop app on Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans.Voice supports interruptions and follow-ups and can start separate tasks, check existing ones and bring progress back into the conversation. | Enterprise and Edu begin with a two-week early-access period, and availability also depends on rollout status and workspace settings. |
| Scheduled tasks | Run recurring tasks in the background and review active, paused and completed runs in Scheduled.Tasks can run on a schedule and, on eligible plans, from supported Gmail, Slack or GitHub events, using uploaded files and connected tools. | Web tasks cannot work directly in a folder on your computer. |
| File creation | Ask for documents, presentations, spreadsheets or PDFs and refine them with targeted feedback. | — |
| Drafting and revision | Use a brief and source material to draft or revise text, then ask for focused changes. | Names, dates and figures it adds still need checking against your own sources. |
Which ChatGPT plan fits how you use it?
Editorial assessment
The plans differ mainly in usage allowance and in which tools they unlock, so the choice comes down to how often you run into limits and whether you need the Plus tools. OpenAI publishes multiples of Plus usage rather than message counts.
- FreeFree
is enough for everyday questions and drafts with the basic model, if you rarely need uploads, image generation or deep research.
- GoEUR 8 per month
suits someone who wants more messages, uploads and images than Free at the lowest paid price and does not mind that the plan may show ads.
- PlusUSD 20 per month
is the step when you need advanced reasoning models, deep research, projects, scheduled tasks or custom GPTs.
- Pro $100USD 100 per month
fits if you hit Plus limits most weeks, or you want Pro reasoning and the maximum deep research allowance.
- Business
fits as soon as two or more people need a shared workspace with SSO and admin controls.
Choose Business for shared administration and workspace data controls, not as an automatic capacity upgrade from an individual Pro subscription. A workspace needs at least two seats; one Premium plus one Standard seat totals USD 120 a month on annual billing or USD 150 monthly at the listed rates. Check the particular feature’s usage limits before changing plans; for eligible Work and Codex usage, additional credits can extend an existing plan.
How is ChatGPT billed, and in which currency?
OpenAI does not let you prepay several months of Plus. Business seats are the only place where yearly billing lowers the price, taking the Standard seat from USD 25 to USD 20 per month.
The pricing page shows local currency, and OpenAI states that prices vary by country and currency; taxes and app-store prices can also differ. Viewed from Germany it listed Go at EUR 8, Plus at EUR 23 and Pro from EUR 103 a month.
Where does ChatGPT fit in a writing and research workflow?
It suits the messy middle of knowledge work: a first draft from rough notes, a long document you need summarised, or a problem you want to think through step by step. Where most tools in our writing and content category do one job, ChatGPT covers drafting, file work, images and voice in one place.
For work that needs sources, web search returns citations and research runs across multiple sources; open the linked pages for any name, date or figure you plan to publish. For a writing-first or search-first alternative, compare Claude and Perplexity, or see all pairings on our comparisons page.
Which ChatGPT features depend on your device or workspace?
Several tools are tied to a plan, an app or an admin setting, which matters if you work across devices or inside a company workspace.
- Phone use: everyday chat works in the ChatGPT mobile app, while the newer ChatGPT Voice experience is built for the desktop app and reaches iOS through Remote.
- Event-triggered tasks from Gmail, Slack or GitHub work on web and mobile for eligible plans, not in the desktop app.
- File creation of documents, decks, spreadsheets and PDFs happens in ChatGPT Work on the web, the mode you switch on when ChatGPT should carry a larger task through to a finished result you can review.
- Image limits on the web depend on your plan and workspace settings.

Can ChatGPT turn messy notes into a factual launch email?
Proposed evaluation · not performed yet
Use ordinary text chat on Free; pasted text avoids relying on a paid upload or export feature.
Input: Use these invented product facts: Cedar desk lamp; USB-C power; two light settings; ships 15 October; price not decided. Ask for an 80-word launch email and a separate list of missing information.
- Paste the five facts and ask the assistant to use no outside claims.
- Check the draft against each fact, then ask it to reduce the email to 50 words while preserving the shipping date.
- Copy both drafts into a plain document and mark every added promise or specification.
Accept: Both versions retain the date and power connection; an unset price remains unknown. Stop or revise: Reject invented discounts, battery life or shipping guarantees; correct the instructions and rerun only the failed part.

Is ChatGPT worth it?
Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.
Worth it if
- You mostly draft, summarize and ask everyday questions, because the Free plan has no cap on text chats with the basic model.
- You run research or reports on a schedule, since Plus adds deep research and scheduled tasks for USD 20 a month.
- You work in a team of two or more and want shared workspace controls, which Business seats provide.
Probably not if
- You want a discount for paying yearly, because individual Go, Plus and Pro plans are billed monthly only.
- You need the 20x usage tier as a new customer, since new Pro $200 sign-ups and upgrades are paused.
- You expect one fixed price everywhere, because Go is a local price that may include ads and should be confirmed at checkout.

Frequently asked questions
How much does ChatGPT cost per month?
ChatGPT starts free, with unlimited text chats on the basic model. Paid individual plans are Go at EUR 8 a month (local price, may include ads), Plus at USD 20 and Pro at USD 100; Pro $200 is paused for new sign-ups. Business seats are USD 20 a month billed annually or USD 25 monthly, with two seats minimum. Confirm the local amount at checkout.
Are ChatGPT projects available on Free?
The Help Center lists project access for signed-in users, including Free, subject to plan and workspace availability. A project organizes chats, files and instructions; its usage limits still follow your account. Regular projects do not directly access folders on your computer, so local folder work requires a separate supported desktop workflow.
What happens to existing Pro $200 subscriptions?
Existing Pro $200 subscribers keep renewing as normal; the pause only stops new sign-ups and upgrades to that tier. Pro $100 is not affected and remains open, with five times the Plus allowance. Compared with Pro $200, it offers a quarter of the usage, since the larger tier gives 20x Plus.
Can a Business workspace mix seat types?
Yes. Premium seats can sit alongside Standard seats in one workspace, so only the heaviest users need the more expensive seat. A Premium seat gives five times a Standard seat's usage and has no five-hour limit. Every Business workspace needs at least two seats in total.
What does Enterprise add over Business?
Enterprise is priced through sales rather than on the pricing page. It adds a larger context window, SCIM user provisioning, enterprise key management (EKM), data residency options and custom data retention. Business already includes SSO, admin controls and no training on business data by default.
What is Remote, and why does Voice on iOS need it?
Remote lets the ChatGPT mobile app control a Mac or Windows PC that you connect by scanning a QR code in the desktop app's settings. Tasks then run on that computer, which must stay awake and online, while the phone follows progress and approves actions. That is why ChatGPT Voice on iOS still depends on a desktop host.
What other AI tools are similar to ChatGPT?
Claude and Perplexity are the two alternatives this page points to: Claude for writing-first work and Perplexity for search-first work. Each has its own profile on this site with plans and sources. ChatGPT covers drafting, file work, images and voice in one place, so a narrower tool can fit a single job such as writing or research.
