Claude vs Perplexity: Cited Search or Drafts, Spaces or Projects
Perplexity answers from live web pages and links the pages behind each claim; Claude turns material into drafts, files and code. Pro costs USD 20 a month on monthly billing on both, and both keep ongoing work in one place: Perplexity in Spaces, Claude in Projects. This page compares those workspaces, what each plan allows in a working week and what five seats cost, from the vendors’ own pages.

The short answer
Choose Perplexity if most work starts as a question about the open web: each answer links its pages, Free allows 3 Pro Searches a day, and Pro adds Research and scheduled Tasks. Choose Claude if the result is a document or code, with long files up to 1M tokens and Claude Code in its USD 20 Pro plan. Pay for both only if you research weekly and write daily.
Claude or Perplexity: which one, when?
Pick by where the work starts and ends
In shortWork that starts as a question about the web points to Perplexity; work that ends as a document, a file or code points to Claude.
Perplexity for mapping an unfamiliar topic
When you do not yet know which pages matter, follow-up questions narrow the topic step by step, and Spaces keep a project's threads, files and custom instructions together for invited viewers or contributors.
Claude for turning checked sources into a deliverable
When the sources are chosen, a Claude project keeps the brief and files across chats and returns a draft you can edit beside the conversation, with Claude Code on the same login for technical work.
A two-tool routine for weekly research and daily writing
Let Perplexity gather and link sources, then pass the checked links and quotes, not only its summary, into a Claude project for drafting; the pair costs USD 40 a month on monthly billing.

Perplexity Spaces vs Claude Projects: what does each workspace hold?
In shortBoth keep files, instructions and threads together. A Space can be opened to invited viewers or contributors; a Claude project is shared only on Team and Enterprise.
The two workspaces, row by row
| Perplexity Spaces | Claude Projects | |
|---|---|---|
| What it groups | Threads, pinned files and custom AI instructions | Chats, uploaded documents and instructions that apply to every chat in the project |

| Web in the answers | Answers are built from live web sources, with a link for each one | Web search is on every plan; Research, on paid plans, needs web search switched on |
| Your other apps | File sync from app connectors is described for Enterprise; Space-specific connectors and skills are not yet available | Research can draw on connected Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs |
| Memory outside the workspace | Saved memories and past searches, which you can view, delete or switch off under Personalize | Memory is listed on the Free plan; its controls are not covered in the sources checked |
| Training on your content | Enterprise Pro: never used for training; individual plans are not covered in the sources checked | Free, Pro and Max: a privacy setting turns it off; Team and Enterprise: off by default |

Which workspace fits the job
A Space suits a topic that several people are still mapping: the web-sourced threads and the files sit together, and an invited contributor can start a thread or ask the next follow-up. Plan around how it reads files: uploads are capped at 50 MB each, and long files are reduced to their most relevant parts.
A Claude project suits material you will draft from. Paid plans add retrieval over project knowledge, and the newest models reach a context window of up to 1M tokens. The catch for a group is the plan: on Free, Pro or Max a project stays with one account, so a shared brief means a Team seat for each member, from two people upward.

Research and sources: how does each search, and how often?
In shortPerplexity searches the web for every answer and can rerun a question on a schedule. Claude searches the web on every plan and adds multi-step, cited Research on paid plans.

What a source link proves
Perplexity returns a link for each source it used, so a sentence can be traced to a page. Its own profile states the limit: a link shows where a sentence came from, not that the page supports it or is still current. Claude’s Research also returns cited answers. On either tool, open the page and confirm the passage and its date before the claim goes into your work.
Which model answers
On Perplexity Free, Perplexity picks the model for each query. Pro and higher plans unlock advanced models from several providers for standard searches, but Research always picks its own. On Claude, Free includes the Sonnet and Haiku models and Opus needs a paid plan.
Questions that come back every week
Perplexity Tasks run once or on a daily, weekly, every-weekday, monthly or yearly schedule, send the result by email or push notification and save it as a thread in your history. Pro and Max allow up to ten. Set to every weekday, ten tasks return up to 50 results in a five-day week; set to daily, up to 70 in seven days. Whether each run counts against search limits is not covered in the sources checked, and the Claude profile lists no scheduled runs.

What does each cost, and how far does a working week go?
Six differences in access, price and output
In shortPro costs the same on monthly billing; the gaps open in the free plans, at the top tier and in what each plan counts.
- Core job
- Perplexity is a search service that answers from live web sources with a link on every answer; Claude is a general assistant for drafting, documents and code that runs a web search when a task needs one. Source: perplexity.ai
- Free access
- Perplexity Free offers practically unlimited basic searches with citations, 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month; Claude Free includes web search, but Research, Claude Code and Opus models need Pro. Source: perplexity.ai
- Top-tier price
- Both list Pro at USD 20 a month. At the top, Perplexity Max costs USD 2,000 a year billed annually, while Claude Max 20x is USD 200 a month with no annual option, so twelve months come to USD 2,400, about USD 400 more. Source: support.claude.com
- Worked example
- Assuming one research report a week, about 4 a month, Perplexity Free covers one of them and Claude Free none, so either routine needs a USD 20 Pro plan; on Perplexity Pro one of up to ten Tasks can also rerun the question on a weekly schedule. Source: intercom.help
- Files and long material
- Perplexity accepts text, code, PDF, image, audio and video files up to 50 MB each and cuts long files to their most relevant parts; Claude's paid plans reach a context window of up to 1M tokens on the newest models. Source: intercom.help
- Output
- Perplexity Research reports export to PDF or a document and can be shared; Claude creates Excel, PowerPoint, Word and PDF files on every plan. Source: support.claude.com

Price per month, as each plan is first listed, from the Claude profile. Bars compare plans of this tool only.
Both Pro bars show the annual-billing rate of USD 17 a month. Perplexity Max is shown at its annual rate; Claude Max is billed monthly only. Perplexity’s USD 10 Education Pro, for verified students and faculty, is left out.
What each plan allows in a working week
In shortPerplexity counts searches and research runs, with numbers published for Free and the Enterprise plans. the Claude profile lists no counts: Claude meters a session allowance that resets every five hours, inside a weekly cap.
| Plan level | Perplexity | Claude |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 3 Pro Searches a day: 15 across five working days. 1 Research query a month, so most weeks have none | Usage limits apply, with no counts on the profile; Research is not included |
| Pro, USD 20 a month on monthly billing | Weekly and monthly limits described in words, not numbers; up to ten scheduled Tasks | Session allowance resets every five hours, inside a weekly cap; Research and Claude Code draw on the same allowance as chat |
| Top individual plan | Max: the highest individual limits, not published as numbers; 10,000 Computer credits a month | Max 20x: 20 times Pro’s per-session usage; the session and weekly limits remain |
| Team seat | Enterprise Pro: 400 Pro Searches a week, 80 per working day; 50 Research queries a month, about 2 per working day. Enterprise Max: 4,000 and 500 | Team Standard: more usage than Pro. Premium: 5 times a Standard seat. No counts on the profile |
Working days: five a week, 22 a month. Perplexity counts are from its plan comparison table; another copy of the same Help Center article lists 80 and 800 Research queries a month for the Enterprise plans. Claude’s weekly cap resets at a fixed time shown under Settings, Usage.

Five people sharing the work, priced
In shortBoth team plans priced here add single sign-on and keep your content out of model training.
| Five seats | Claude Team, Standard seats | Perplexity Enterprise Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Billed annually | USD 1,200 a year (5 × 20 × 12) | USD 2,000 a year (5 × 400) |
| Billed monthly | USD 125 a month (5 × 25) | USD 200 a month (5 × 40) |
| One heavy user | One Premium seat and four Standard: USD 2,160 a year ((100 + 4 × 20) × 12) | An Enterprise Max seat is USD 3,250 a year; mixing seat types is not covered in the sources checked |
| Team size and billing | 2 to 150 people | Billed per active seat |
| Shared workspace | Shared projects with view or edit permission | Spaces; file sync from app connectors described for Enterprise |
Arithmetic on the seat prices on each profile, before tax. Claude Enterprise, at USD 20 a seat plus usage at API rates, is left out because its usage charge depends on the work.

Common questions
Which is cheaper, Claude or Perplexity?
Both Pro plans list USD 20 on monthly billing. Claude publishes a USD 200 annual total; Perplexity's displayed USD 17 monthly equivalent should not be multiplied into an exact annual charge without checking checkout. Education eligibility, team controls and the features actually needed can matter more than a small difference between the entry subscriptions.
Can Claude do sourced research like Perplexity?
Yes. Claude Free searches the web, and Pro adds Research, which runs several linked searches, returns cited answers and can include connected Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Docs. Perplexity puts search first: its Free plan already includes 3 Pro Searches a day, and paid plans let you pick among advanced models for standard searches.
Can Perplexity write and revise long drafts?
It can answer follow-ups, write a Research report and export it, and Max lists file and app creation with minimal volume limits. For a draft you rework many times, Claude offers more room: project instructions apply to every chat, and larger pieces open as Artifacts you edit beside the conversation.
How many deep research runs do I get?
Perplexity Free allows 1 Research query a month, Enterprise Pro lists 50 a month and Enterprise Max 500; Pro and Max give no fixed number. Claude sets no separate Research count: runs draw on the same five-hour and weekly allowance as chat, only faster, and Max 5x or 20x raises that allowance.
Is the API included in either subscription?
No. Perplexity's developer API is a separate product billed per token, and its rates say nothing about a Pro or Max seat. Claude's API is billed through a separate Console account, and if an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set on your computer, Claude Code charges API rates instead of your plan.
What this page does not judge
Most pages ranking for this comparison run writing, coding, reasoning and research tests side by side, or quote user ratings. We have not run those tests, and neither profile documents answer accuracy, writing quality, speed or ease of use, so none of them is ranked here. Perplexity Computer and Claude Code appear only as plan features; how well either completes a job is not judged. The check below measures it on your own material.
Pick one question from your real week that needs current sources and ends in a short brief. Put the same files and instructions into a Perplexity Space and a Claude project on the plans you already have, and ask it in both. Open every cited link, mark each sentence the page does not support, and note any plan limit that stopped you before the brief was done.
How this comparison was made
Plans, limits and workspace terms come from the Claude and Perplexity profiles on this site, which cite Anthropic’s and Perplexity’s pricing and help pages and carry their own check dates; tables marked as live are read from those profiles each time the page loads. Sections follow the topics the pages ranking for this search cover, plus the Spaces and Projects question searchers ask, limited to what the vendors document. No rating is given and no price is converted. See our editorial policy.
