Which should you choose?

Choose Midjourney if you generate images most days, can pay at least USD 10 a month, and accept public output or pay USD 60 for Pro with Stealth; from Standard at USD 30, unlimited Relax images outlast the Fast hours. Choose Adobe Firefly if you want a free start, finish work in Photoshop or Express, need Content Credentials, or mix images with video, audio and partner models.

Key differences between Midjourney and Adobe Firefly

  • Billing unitMidjourney meters GPU time: an image prompt of four images usually uses about one Fast minute. Firefly meters generative credits: paid plans keep standard image features such as Generative Fill unlimited, while Firefly Image 5, partner models, video and audio spend credits.
  • Worked exampleAt entry price, Midjourney Basic (USD 10 a month) buys 200 Fast minutes, about 200 prompts or 800 images; Firefly Standard (EUR 10.98 including VAT) buys 2,000 credits, about 200 Firefly Image 5 generations at 10 credits each, assuming no credits go to video or audio.
  • Free accessMidjourney has no free plan or trial on the website or Discord; only the separate niji journey app offers a limited trial. Firefly Free gives daily generations across image, video and audio on select models, with the daily number unpublished.
  • PrivacyMidjourney output can appear on the public Explore page unless you use Stealth mode, which starts with Pro at USD 60 a month. Adobe says it does not train Firefly on subscribers' personal or generated content.
  • Models and appsMidjourney runs its own models on midjourney.com and in Discord. Firefly adds partner models from Google, OpenAI, Runway, Luma AI and others and spends one credit balance across Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Express.
  • OutputMidjourney upscales V8.2 images to 2048 x 2048 pixels and exports video as MP4 or GIF at up to 720p and 21 seconds. Firefly image dimensions depend on the selected model: the technical guide lists 2000x2000 for its documented route, while some partner models advertise 4K; Firefly Video supports up to 1080p.

Which one, when

Midjourney for high-volume concept and style work

Standard keeps generating in the Relax queue after its 15 Fast hours, which suits illustrators iterating on hundreds of prompts a month; Style References and Personalization profiles let you reuse a look across prompts.

Firefly for images that end up in Adobe files

One login covers generation, Generative Fill edits and handoff to Photoshop or Express, and the Free plan lets a designer check the fit before paying.

Firefly when clips must be 1080p

Midjourney video stops at 720p, so sharper clips point to Firefly; at 100 credits per second, Pro Plus's 10,000 credits give about 100 seconds of 1080p a month, or about 100 five-second clips at 540p.

Our editorial judgement about fit. Neither tool carries a score here, and we have not run controlled tests against either one.

Strengths
  • Web and Discord access: A subscription works on both midjourney.com and Discord, and settings such as speed and Stealth mode sync between them.
  • Unlimited Relax generation: Standard, Pro and Mega include unlimited image generation in the slower Relax Mode, and Pro and Mega add SD video in Relax.
  • Ownership of outputs: The help center says you own the images and videos you create, even after cancelling, subject to documented exceptions.
  • Free daily generations: The free plan needs no subscription and gives daily generations across image, video and audio that refresh every day.
  • Unlimited standard features: Every paid Firefly plan includes unlimited standard image generations such as Generative Fill without deducting credits.
  • Many models in one app: Adobe and partner models for images, video and audio are available with one login and one credit balance.
Limits to plan around
  • No free trial: No free trial is available on midjourney.com or Discord; only the separate niji journey app offers a limited trial.
  • Public by default: Creations can appear on the public Explore page unless you use Stealth mode, which requires Pro or Mega.
  • Fast time expires: Unused monthly Fast time does not roll over, and purchased Fast hours expire after 60 days.
  • Credits do not roll over: Unused generative credits expire when the monthly allocation resets on the billing date.
  • Premium features use many credits: Video, audio and partner model outputs draw credits quickly; a single five-second 1080p clip uses 500 credits.
  • Free limits are not published: Adobe does not state an exact number of free daily generations and says limits are subject to change.

What happens when the monthly allowance runs out?

Both tools reset their allowance each billing cycle with no rollover, but they fail in different ways. On Midjourney Standard, Pro and Mega, image prompts keep running in the slower Relax queue, which waits roughly 0 to 30 minutes; Basic has no Relax Mode, so its only fallback is extra Fast time at USD 4 an hour that expires after 60 days.

On paid Firefly plans, standard image features such as Generative Fill stay unlimited at zero credits, so only credit-based work stops, including Firefly Image 5 generations at 10 credits each. You can wait for the reset, move up a plan or add a credit pack starting at 2,000 credits, and Premium subscribers can queue up to 20 video generations in the background.

  • Heavy stills, light video: Midjourney Standard never locks you out of images.
  • Stills plus editing in Adobe apps: Firefly Standard keeps Generative Fill and other standard edits unlimited.
  • Video every week: both drain quickly, since four HD Midjourney clips take about 26 Fast minutes and one 5-second 1080p Firefly clip takes 500 credits.

Who can see the images, and who may use them commercially?

Midjourney calls itself open by default: images and videos can surface on the Explore page even when made in a private Discord server. You own what you create, but a company grossing more than USD 1,000,000 a year needs Pro or Mega, and upscaling another member’s image does not transfer ownership.

Adobe says its own Firefly models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, which underpins its commercial-use position. Partner models follow different terms: Adobe did not build them, their fitness for a project is the user’s call, and beta outputs are not indemnified for eligible teams and enterprise customers.

Where do editing and delivery happen?

Midjourney keeps the whole loop on midjourney.com or in Discord, with one subscription and synced settings across both. Its Editor adds layers, smart selection and custom aspect ratios, and can save a transparent PNG of erased areas.

Firefly runs in the browser and in iOS and Android apps, and a result can move straight into Photoshop, Premiere or Adobe Express, where the same credit balance applies. The web app needs Chrome, Edge or Firefox 113 or later, or Safari 17.4 or later.

Which path fits which creator?

Prompt volume, privacy needs and where the file goes next settle most choices.

  • Midjourney Basic: up to about 200 prompts a month for someone who can live with public output.
  • Midjourney Standard: illustrators and art directors iterating daily, who would otherwise run out of Fast time mid-month.
  • Midjourney Pro: unreleased client work, or a company above the revenue line.
  • Firefly Free or Standard: designers who finish in Photoshop or Express and want to try before paying.
  • Firefly Pro Plus or Premium: teams producing 1080p clips every week alongside stills; at 1080p, Pro Plus covers about twenty 5-second clips a month (10,000 / 500).

Frequently asked questions

Which is cheaper, Midjourney or Adobe Firefly?

Firefly to start, because its Free plan costs nothing and Midjourney has no free tier. Among paid entry plans, Midjourney Basic lists USD 10 a month billed monthly, or USD 96 a year billed annually, while Firefly Standard shows EUR 10.98 a month including VAT on the German page. Midjourney Standard at USD 30 is its first plan with unlimited Relax images.

Can a design team share one account or credit pool?

Neither pools usage by default. Midjourney allows one user per account, with no seat or admin management and no SSO; bulk invoicing starts at 50 yearly Pro or Mega plans. Firefly sells Business licenses at EUR 18.48, EUR 46.21 or EUR 184.86 a month excluding VAT on annual plans billed monthly, and each user keeps a separate credit allocation unless the enterprise buys Shared Credits.

How long and how sharp can the video be?

A Midjourney clip starts at 5 seconds and can be extended to 21 seconds, at 480p on every plan or 720p on Standard and above in Fast Mode. Firefly renders 540p, 720p or 1080p at 24 frames per second, costing 20, 50 or 100 credits per second, and Premium adds unlimited Firefly Video Model use in Generate Video.

Can a client check where an image came from?

Both tools mark their output. Every Midjourney image carries a hidden ID tag that the free checker at midjourney.com/verify can read, although screenshots and edits often remove it. Adobe attaches Content Credentials, tamper-evident metadata naming the AI tool used, to assets whose pixels are fully generated in Firefly, so platforms that read them can show the origin.

Can I remove Midjourney images later?

Only in bulk. Single creations cannot be deleted, and trashing an image does not hide it; removing everything takes an account deletion request that completes within 30 days. After upgrading to Pro or Mega, older public images must be made private one by one, and work made in public Discord channels stays visible even with Stealth switched on.
