Midjourney
Style References and Personalization profiles let later images copy the look of a chosen anchor image, and the web Editor inpaints one area instead of regenerating the whole picture.
Check first: There is no free trial; Basic (USD 10 per month) has no Relax Mode, and creations can appear on the public Explore page unless you use Stealth mode, which needs Pro or Mega.
Leonardo.Ai
Elements training saves a style or character for reuse in later generations, and Omni editing changes a detail inside an existing image with up to six reference images, depending on the model.
Check first: Free gives 150 tokens a day, but those generations are public and can be remixed; Private Mode starts with Essential (USD 12 per month billed monthly, USD 10 on yearly billing).
Adobe Firefly
Generative Fill and Prompt to Edit fix part of a generated image, and results open in Photoshop or Express for layout, with Adobe and partner models under one credit balance.
Check first: Adobe does not publish the free daily generation count; paid plans include unlimited standard image features such as Generative Fill, while partner-model outputs draw on monthly credits.
Canva
Generated images land in the design editor, where Brand Controls can restrict colours to the Brand Kit and Magic Layers splits an image into editable layers so one element changes without regenerating.
Check first: Free allows up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month; Ultra quality, transparent PNG and SVG exports need a paid plan.
ChatGPT
You can attach the anchor image as a reference, ask for the next subject in the same chat, and request edits to a result in plain language.
Check first: Image generation is limited on Free and the profile gives no fixed image count for any plan; Go (EUR 8 per month, may include ads) raises the image allowance.
Considered but not listed
- Runway: Runway generates and edits video from text or image prompts; its profile documents no still-image generation, so it is covered on the video-editing page instead.

One fixed task to compare them
Proposed evaluation, not performed: run the same input through two or three shortlisted tools and judge each against the same acceptance line. We have not run it; results depend on your plan and account.
Sample input
One shared style line: "flat vector-style illustration, navy (hex 1F2A44) and coral (hex FF6F59) only, white background, no text". Three subjects: a bicycle, a coffee pot, a houseplant. Deliverable: three square images for one blog series.
Steps
- Generate the bicycle with the style line and pick one result as the style anchor.
- Generate the coffee pot and the houseplant with the tool's reference feature (style reference, trained Element, reference image or Brand Kit) pointed at the anchor, not the text alone.
- Fix one flaw in one image with an edit instruction or inpainting instead of regenerating it.
- Export all three at the same size and record the plan, the usage spent and whether the images were public.
- Passes if
- The three images use only the two colours plus white, share line weight and shading closely enough to sit side by side, contain no stray text, match in size, and the edit changed only the targeted area.
- Fails if
- The palette or style drifts so the set has to be restarted, lettering appears, the edit alters the whole image, or keeping the images private or downloading them needed a plan you had not budgeted.
Questions about ai tools for image generation
Can I use the generated images commercially?
Check each provider's terms for your plan. Midjourney's help center says you own the images you create, subject to documented exceptions, and company use has a revenue threshold to check. Leonardo.Ai says generated images may be used commercially, including by free users. Canva notes that many jurisdictions, including the US, do not give AI-created works copyright protection.
Which tools let me run the style test without paying?
Leonardo.Ai's Free plan gives 150 tokens a day, but the images are public. Adobe Firefly Free offers limited daily generations, and Canva Free allows up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month. ChatGPT Free includes limited image generation. Midjourney has no free trial on its website or Discord, so it needs at least Basic.
What if I need a vector file rather than a PNG?
Canva exports SVG, but only on paid plans, and Adobe Firefly lists vectors among the outputs it generates. The Midjourney, Leonardo.Ai and ChatGPT profiles on this site do not document vector export, so either trace their output in a vector editor or pick a tool whose export list includes SVG.
Do unused credits carry over to the next month?
Mostly not. Midjourney's unused Fast time does not roll over and purchased hours expire after 60 days. Firefly credits expire when the monthly allocation resets, and Canva's paid AI allowance resets on the billing date even on yearly plans. Leonardo.Ai paid plans bank unused tokens up to three months' worth, but cancelling loses the bank.
