Strengths, limits and who it suits, in full
Strengths
- A usable free paraphraser Free paraphrases up to 125 words at a time in two modes, enough to rework a sentence or short paragraph without paying.
- Changes are visible and adjustable The synonym slider, word-level synonyms and change colors let you accept or reject edits instead of taking a whole rewritten passage.
- Team seats are cheaper per writer The Team page lists $7.50 a seat a month for 2-10 seats billed every 12 months, below the individual $8.33 annual rate.
Limits
- Only the annual price is on the pricing page The pricing page read showed $8.33 a month billed annually; the help center confirms monthly and quarterly plans but not their prices, and says price depends on region and currency.
- Limits differ across tools and platforms Plagiarism checks have a monthly word cap and summaries a per-run cap even on Premium, and the pricing page says limits may vary across platforms.
- Detector results can be wrong QuillBot's own help center says its AI detector can flag human-written text.
Who it suits
- Students and writers revising their own short passages the free 125-word limit and mode controls fit sentence- and paragraph-level rewording where you can judge the result against the meaning you intended.
- Small teams that want one bill for several writers the Team page sells Premium seats from 2 writers with a management dashboard and central billing.
- Not for anyone who needs guaranteed detector avoidance The provider does not promise it, and its help center acknowledges false positives.

Key features
| Feature | What it does | Watch out |
|---|---|---|
| Paraphraser: 2 modes on Free (Standard, Fluency); 9 built-in modes plus unlimited Custom modes on Premium (pricing page) | — | |
| Synonym slider and click-a-word synonyms to control how much wording changes (paraphraser page) | The paraphraser page says the Synonym Slider moves between a more accurate rephrase with fewer changes and a more creative one with more changes, and that clicking a word shows suggested synonyms. Free gets Standard and Fluency; Premium adds Formal, Simple, Creative, Academic, Expand, Shorten and Humanize, plus Custom modes you describe yourself. | A more creative setting changes more words, so it also gives more room for a number, negation or qualifier to drift. The page describes the controls; it does not measure meaning preservation. |
| Change colors that separate word substitutions from structural edits (help center) | — | |
| Grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator, plagiarism checker, AI detector and AI humanizer in the same account (pricing page) | — | |
| Paraphrasing in 23 languages and translation into 40+ on Premium (pricing page) | — | |
| One subscription covers several tools with separate limits | The pricing table lists the paraphraser, grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator, plagiarism checker, AI detector, humanizer, AI chat and image generation under one plan. Premium's limits differ by tool: plagiarism checks are 25,000 words a month and summaries 6,000 words, while paraphrasing is listed as full access. | The pricing page adds that limits may vary across platforms, so the extension or mobile app can differ from the web table. |
| Detection and humanizing are separate from authorship | The pricing page sells an AI Detector and an AI Humanizer. QuillBot's help center says detectors sometimes produce false positives, and its paraphrasing article does not promise that rewritten text will pass detection. | A detector percentage, from QuillBot or anyone else, is not evidence of who wrote a text or whether it may be submitted under a course or publisher policy. |
Which limit will you hit first on Free?
The 125-word paraphrase cap is per run, so a whole essay means many short passes, and only Standard and Fluency are available. The other caps matter less for rewording: summaries stop at 1,200 words and the detector and humanizer are limited. If you mainly need a formal, academic or shorter version of the same text, those modes sit behind Premium on the pricing page, which is a better reason to upgrade than word count alone.
What must remain unchanged in a rewrite?
Mark the parts that carry the decision before changing the style: numbers, dates, negations, named parties and uncertainty. “May reduce” is not interchangeable with “reduces”. A smoother sentence can become less accurate when a qualification disappears, and moving the synonym slider toward more creative output gives more room for that to happen.
The change-color guide distinguishes word substitutions from structural edits. Use those marks to find what needs review. A color is not a confidence score, and a synonym that reads naturally can still be wrong for a specialist term.
Do not use detector scores as the acceptance test
QuillBot’s help center acknowledges false positives. Its paraphrasing guidance does not promise detector avoidance. Review meaning, attribution and the rules of the publication or course instead of repeatedly rewriting to chase a percentage.
Evaluate a short factual paragraph
Proposed evaluation, not performed: use Free Standard or Fluency with an original passage under 80 words, below the 125-word free limit. No confidential text is needed.
Use this fictional input: “The pilot included 12 teams. Nine submitted feedback by Friday. The results may suggest shorter handoff times, but they do not establish a causal improvement. The remaining three teams will be contacted next week.”
- Before rewriting, list the facts that must survive: 12 teams, nine responses, Friday, uncertainty, no causal conclusion and three outstanding teams.
- Choose one mode and a conservative synonym setting. Review the output beside the input.
- Reject any version that strengthens the claim, changes a number or removes the unfinished work.
- Copy the accepted wording into its intended document and read the surrounding paragraph for continuity.
Record whether the rewrite is clearer without losing those facts. A plagiarism or AI-detection score is not the outcome of this exercise.
Is QuillBot worth it?
Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.
Worth it if
- You reword a sentence or short paragraph at a time, because the free 125-word limit per run covers that without a subscription.
- You need formal, academic or shorter versions of your own text, since those modes and Custom modes unlock only on Premium.
- You are buying for two or more writers, because Team seats are priced below the individual annual Premium rate and come with central billing.
Probably not if
- You want to rework a whole essay on Free, because every pass stops at 125 words and only Standard and Fluency are open.
- You want to pay month to month at a known price, because the pages read list only the annual Premium rate, not monthly or quarterly prices.
- You are counting on a rewrite to pass an AI detector, because QuillBot makes no such promise and admits its own detector can flag human writing.

Frequently asked questions
Is QuillBot free to use?
Yes, with limits. The pricing page lists a Free plan at $0 that paraphrases up to 125 words at a time in Standard and Fluency modes, fixes basic grammar errors, writes summaries up to 1,200 words and gives limited AI detection and humanizing. Longer paraphrases, the other seven built-in modes and Custom modes need Premium.
How much is QuillBot Premium?
The pricing page read from the United States on 7 October 2026 showed Premium at $8.33 a month billed annually. QuillBot's help center says monthly and quarterly plans also exist and that prices depend on region and local currency at checkout, so confirm the amount and billing period on the checkout page before paying.
Does QuillBot paraphrasing get past AI detectors?
QuillBot does not promise that. Its help center says AI detectors, including its own, sometimes flag human-written text, and its paraphrasing guidance makes no promise of a different detector result. Judge a rewrite by meaning, attribution and the rules of your course or publisher rather than by a detection percentage.
Is QuillBot cheaper for a team?
Per seat, yes on list prices. The Team page shows $7.50 a seat a month for 2-10 writers, $6.66 for 11-50 and $5.83 for 51 or more, each billed every 12 months, against $8.33 for an individual annual Premium plan. Every seat gets Premium features plus admin dashboards, a team style guide and central billing.
