AI tools for rewriting

You have a sentence that sounds wrong, a paragraph that needs plainer English or an email in the wrong tone. Which AI rewriters handle an ordinary working day on their free plan, and how do you check that the rewrite kept your meaning?

QuillBot, Wordtune, Grammarly and 3 more

Which tool fits, in short?

Pick by the size of the text and how often you rewrite. QuillBot's free paraphraser takes 125 words at a time and shows how far each mode moves the wording; Wordtune's free plan gives 10 rewrites a day with tone and length choices; Grammarly rewrites inside the apps you already use from 100 free prompts a month. ChatGPT's free plan has no rewrite counter but no modes either. Copy.ai and Jasper have no free plan and suit teams rewriting to one brand voice.

This is a source-led shortlist, not a performance ranking. Open each profile for the provider source, check dates and plan conditions.

How each option fits rewriting

Each note comes from the tool's source-checked profile. The condition line is what to confirm before you rely on it for this task.

  1. QuillBot

The Paraphraser rewrites a passage in a chosen mode, a Synonym Slider sets how far the wording moves from the original, and clicking a word lists synonyms. Change colors separate word swaps from structural edits, which makes the comparison with the original quick.

Check first: Free takes 125 words per run in Standard and Fluency, so the example's 280-word paragraph needs three runs (125 + 125 + 30). Premium, $8.33 a month billed annually, lists full paraphrasing access plus modes such as Formal, Simple and Shorten; monthly and quarterly prices were not shown on the pages read.

  2. Wordtune

Highlight a sentence or paragraph in the web editor or the Chrome and Edge extensions, click Rewrite and pick a suggestion, then move it between casual and formal or make it longer or shorter. It also suggests synonyms and translates ten languages into English before rewriting.

Check first: Basic's 10 rewrites a day cannot hold the example's 13 daily requests; Advanced lists 30 a day at $13.99 per month billed monthly ($6.99 per month billed annually). Wordtune warns that a suggestion may slightly change the meaning, and its FAQ says subscriptions are not refundable.

  3. Grammarly

Rewrites, tone changes and drafts run from a prompt inside browsers, the desktop apps, Microsoft Office, Google Docs and mobile keyboards, so the text is rewritten where it is being written. Suggestions cover 24 languages besides English on every plan, and Docs places a Paraphraser agent beside your text.

Check first: Every prompt draws on a monthly allowance: Free's 100 run out on the eighth working day of the example (100 / 13 = 7.7), while Pro's 2,000 cover its 286 a month. Pro costs USD 12 per member per month billed yearly (USD 30 billed monthly); the plan behind the Paraphraser agent is not stated.

  4. ChatGPT

Paste the text, say what must stay and what should change, such as reading level, length or tone, then ask for focused revisions in the same chat. Free includes unlimited text chats with the basic model, so the example's 286 monthly requests fit without a counter.

Check first: There are no rewrite modes, synonym lists or change colors: the written instruction is the only control, and you compare versions by eye. Names, dates and figures it adds still need checking against your source, and features reach accounts unevenly by plan, region and rollout.

  5. Copy.ai

Chat responses move into an editor where you highlight a passage to rewrite it or press Tab to extend it, with word and character counts beside the text. Brand Voice builds a tone profile from pasted sample content and applies it to the rewrite.

Check first: There is no free plan: Chat costs USD 29 a month, or USD 24 billed annually, for five seats, which pays off for a team rewriting to one brand voice rather than for occasional sentences. No PDF or Word export of the text is documented.

  6. Jasper

Canvas has an AI toolbar for rewriting and summarizing a draft, and Jasper Chat applies a stored Brand Voice, Audience and knowledge files to bulk edits. On Business, Grid runs prompts across spreadsheet-style rows when many pieces need the same rewrite.

Check first: No free plan: Pro starts with a 7-day trial and costs USD 59 a month billed yearly or USD 69 monthly for one seat, and Grid needs Business, priced through sales. It suits marketing teams that already keep a brand voice there, not one-off sentence fixes.

Considered but not listed

  • Claude: A general assistant for writing and documents; its profile documents no rewrite controls, revision feature or rewrite allowance, so it would repeat the ChatGPT route without that documentation.
  • Superhuman: Its plan ladder bundles Grammarly with Mail, Go and Docs; paragraph rewrites come through Grammarly, which is compared here on its own profile.
  • Notion AI: Writes and edits pages inside a Notion workspace, but its AI needs the Business plan and the profile documents no sentence-level rewrite controls.
  • Merlin AI: A multi-model assistant with 70+ tools in a Chrome extension and apps; its profile names no rewriting tool and no limit that would apply to one.
  • Lorka AI: A multi-model chat subscription with only a few free messages; its profile lists no rewrite controls and no per-model usage limits.

What to compare for this task

These questions keep the shortlist tied to the work instead of turning it into a generic feature list.

Where free stops

Measure your load in the tool's own unit (words per run, rewrites per day, prompts per month or paid seats) and test it against a normal day, not a single sentence.

How much it changes

A synonym swap, a preset mode, a tone or length setting, or a free-form instruction: pick the control that matches whether you want a light edit or a new sentence.

Languages in and out

Check whether the tool rewrites in your language or translates into English first, and whether that language support is on the free plan.

Meaning and attribution

Compare the rewrite with the original for names, figures and qualifiers, and keep citations: a reworded source is still a source.

One fixed task to compare them

Proposed evaluation, not performed: run the same input through two or three shortlisted tools and judge each against the same acceptance line. We have not run it; results depend on your plan and account.

Sample input

One writer's working month: each of 22 working days brings one 280-word newsletter paragraph to rewrite in plainer English and six email sentences to rephrase, two versions each, so 13 rewrite requests a day and 286 a month. Names, prices, dates and the product claim must stay exactly as written, and the final text is in English.

Steps

  1. Write down the unit that limits the plan you are pricing: words per run, rewrites per day, prompts per month or paid seats. Keep each tool in its own unit.
  2. Apply the load: the 280-word paragraph is three QuillBot Free runs; 13 requests a day exceed Wordtune Basic's 10; 286 a month exceed Grammarly Free's 100 but fit Pro's 2,000.
  3. Before rewriting, mark every name, number, date and qualifier in the original so each one can be ticked off in the new version.
  4. Choose the control that matches the change: a synonym or preset mode for a light edit, a tone or length setting for register, or a written instruction such as 'reading level of a 12-year-old, keep every figure' for plain English.
  5. Rewrite the paragraph and two of the sentences, then compare each version with the original line by line and reject any version that changed a marked item or softened a claim.
  6. Keep the original beside the rewrite in your document; where a passage came from someone else's work, keep the citation.
Passes if
All 286 monthly requests fit one plan in that tool's unit, the paragraph is rewritten in full without a silent cut at a word cap, and every marked name, number, date and qualifier is unchanged in the version you keep.
Fails if
A daily or monthly cap stops the work before the month ends, a word limit truncates the paragraph, or a rewrite changes a figure, drops a qualifier or turns a hedge into a promise and nobody notices.

Questions about rewriting with AI

Is there a free AI sentence rewriter?

Yes, four of these six have a free route, each with its own ceiling. QuillBot Free paraphrases short passages in two modes, Wordtune Basic stops after ten rewrites in a day, Grammarly Free gives 100 AI prompts a month and ChatGPT Free has unlimited text chats on its basic model. Copy.ai has no free plan, and Jasper offers a 7-day trial before Pro.

Can AI rephrase text in Spanish or another language?

It depends on the tool. QuillBot Premium paraphrases in 23 languages and translates into 40+, and those languages are not listed for Free. Wordtune translates from ten languages, Spanish among them, into English and then rewrites, so its output is English. Grammarly gives suggestions in 24 languages besides English on every plan. The ChatGPT, Copy.ai and Jasper profiles list no rewrite languages.

How do I simplify words or find a synonym with AI?

For one word, QuillBot lists suggested synonyms when you click it, and Wordtune's Rewrite page offers synonyms for choosing the right word. For a whole sentence, QuillBot's Simple and Shorten modes need Premium, Wordtune's Shorten trims length, and in ChatGPT you can ask for a lower reading level while keeping named figures. Check that the plainer word still means the same thing.

Is rewording a source with AI still plagiarism?

Rewording does not change whose idea it is, so borrowed facts and arguments still need a citation. Plagiarism checks sit on paid plans: QuillBot Premium checks up to 25,000 words a month, and Grammarly's Plagiarism Checker needs Pro. A clean check only shows the wording differs from indexed sources; your course or publisher decides what use of AI is allowed.

Can I rewrite a whole document at once?

Only some tools are built for it. QuillBot Free stops at 125 words per run, while Premium lists full paraphrasing access. Jasper's Grid runs prompts across spreadsheet-style rows on Business, with the first 10 rows free for testing, and Copy.ai Workflows chain writing steps into repeatable runs. Wordtune and Grammarly work on the text you highlight or prompt, piece by piece.

Can ChatGPT rewrite text?

Yes, ChatGPT can rewrite text: paste it, say what must stay and what should change, such as reading level, length or tone, and ask for focused revisions in the same chat. The free plan includes unlimited text chats with the basic model. It has no rewrite modes or synonym lists, so check names, dates and figures against your source.
