Strengths, limits and who it suits, in full

Strengths

  • No markup on list prices The pricing page says text models cost the same per million tokens as at the provider.
  • No monthly commitment Pay as you go has no fee and deposits start at $1 by card.
  • Local chat history by default Web conversations stay on the device unless sync or sharing is switched on.

Limits

  • Pro excludes the big commercial models The $12 plan covers open-source models; GPT, Claude and Gemini are billed from the balance.
  • Pro is personal only The terms bar commercial use, resale and shared accounts on subscriptions.
  • Retention depends on the route Final logging depends on the selected provider, and stored file copies have no single maximum retention period.

Who it suits

  • Occasional users of several models a small balance suits people who need GPT, Claude or Gemini a few times a week without three subscriptions.
  • Heavy open-source users Pro fits daily chat or coding on GLM, DeepSeek, Kimi or MiniMax models within the weekly allowance.
  • Developers building on an API pay as you go is the plan the terms allow for commercial apps and resale, subject to each model's own terms.
  • Privacy-minded individuals local history and zero-data-retention routing help, but provider logging still has to be checked per model.

How much does NanoGPT cost?

Regional prices: Prices are in USD.

The weekly Pro allowance resets on Monday at 00:00 UTC and does not reset when the plan renews; cached input tokens count toward it. With "Use balance after limits" switched on, usage past a cap is charged to the balance. The included model list changes over time and is recorded here as of September 29, 2026. Subscriptions renew automatically; cancelling stops the next renewal.

How far does it go?

  • Allowance on double-counted modelsOn a 2x model such as GLM 5.3 or DeepSeek V4 Pro: 60,000,000 ÷ 2 = 30,000,000 input tokens a week. Pay-as-you-go example from the pricing page: 57 input and 153 output tokens on GPT-5.5 at $5 and $30 per million = 57 × 5 ÷ 1,000,000 + 153 × 30 ÷ 1,000,000 = $0.000285 + $0.00459 = $0.004875.

What can you do on NanoGPT for free?

Pay as you go has no monthly fee, and the plan card lists one free model available on the web only. Everything else draws on a prepaid balance. The getting-started page says the API can be used without an account, and web conversation history is kept in the browser by default rather than on NanoGPT servers.

Deposits start at $1 by card through Stripe or $0.10 in Nano cryptocurrency, and other cryptocurrencies are accepted. Because a balance is prepaid, a small top-up caps what a trial can cost; there is no card on file that renews automatically unless you subscribe.

What does the $12 Pro plan include, and what does it leave out?

Pro covers most open-source text models, such as GLM, DeepSeek, Kimi, MiniMax and Xiaomi MiMo, up to 60 million input tokens a week across all of them, plus 100 included images a day from a short list of image models. It works on the web and through the API. Models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google are not in the allowance and are charged from the balance, with a 5% discount on eligible paid text models.

Not every token counts the same. GLM 5, 5.1 and 5.3, Kimi K2.7 Code and DeepSeek V4 Pro count double; other included models count once. TEE variants and some provider-specific routes are excluded, and the subscription page itself advises against subscribing for the image models, which may not stay included.

  • Weekly cap: 60 million input tokens, cached input included, resetting Monday 00:00 UTC.
  • Daily cap: 100 included images.
  • Choosing a specific provider on an included model moves that request to pay-as-you-go pricing.

When is pay-as-you-go pricing cheaper than Pro?

The pricing page says text models are billed at the provider’s list price, with GPT-5.5 at $5 per million input tokens and $30 per million output tokens, the same as at OpenAI. Each API response returns the exact cost. The only opt-in surcharges are 5% for pinning a provider and a fee of 5% of normal cost for bring-your-own-key requests.

If most of your use is a few prompts a day on GPT, Claude or Gemini, a small balance is likely cheaper, because Pro does not cover those models. If you run long open-source sessions or coding agents every day, the weekly allowance can outlast $12 of list-price tokens. Check the Usage page after a normal week before deciding.

Can you use NanoGPT for client work or an app?

The answer depends on the plan. The terms say subscriptions are for personal, non-commercial use only, including no reselling, building commercial products or serving multiple end users, and each subscription is for one person. Pay as you go explicitly permits commercial use, including resale.

That permission does not override the model provider. The terms list the usage policies of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and other providers and make you responsible for checking that each model allows your integration and downstream use. You own the output under NanoGPT’s terms, subject to those model licences.

Where do your prompts and files go?

Prompts are forwarded to the provider of the model you choose. NanoGPT says it does not train on your input or output and does not sell content, and that it picks the strictest retention settings each provider offers. Final retention and logging still depend on the provider; the terms list, for example, a broker route without guaranteed zero data retention.

Uploaded files attached to a request may be copied to NanoGPT-managed storage, and the terms say no single maximum retention period applies to those copies. Memory is off by default and stays in the browser until sync is enabled. Keep confidential documents out of the chat unless you have chosen a route with a documented zero-retention commitment.

Who can sign up, and what happens after a chargeback?

The terms require users to be at least 18 and exclude people in comprehensively sanctioned places, including Russia, Belarus, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria and occupied regions of Ukraine. They also prohibit using another person’s likeness or voice without consent and sexual content involving identifiable people without their consent.

If a payment is disputed or charged back, NanoGPT may suspend the whole account, including an active subscription and any prepaid balance, while the dispute is open or afterwards. The refund policy asks you to contact support first; it describes good-faith refund requests as generally approved, with exceptions for heavy completed usage.

Would a normal week of use have fitted inside Pro?

Proposed evaluation · not performed yet

On pay as you go with a $5 balance and no subscription, do one working week of your normal writing or coding on two included open-source models, one counted once and one counted twice, plus one GPT or Claude model. Stop if the balance runs out before the week ends.

  1. Record the starting balance and the date of the Monday reset.
  2. Use the same three models each day for the tasks you normally do.
  3. At the end of the week, export or copy the per-model token counts and charges from the Usage page.
  4. Apply the 1x and 2x weights to the open-source input tokens and compare the total with 60 million.
  5. Add the GPT or Claude charges, which Pro would not cover, less the 5% discount.

Accept the comparison when every request has a logged model and cost. Reject weeks with missing usage records or unexplained charges. No spending or allowance result is reported until the week is run.

For a monthly multi-model subscription with one credit balance, see YesChat. For a single provider’s full product, compare ChatGPT and Claude.

Is NanoGPT worth it?

Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.

Worth it if

  • You want GPT, Claude or Gemini a few times a week and would rather top up a small balance than keep several subscriptions running.
  • Most of your daily chat or coding runs on open-source models such as GLM, DeepSeek or Kimi, where a weekly input-token allowance can go further than list prices.
  • You are building an app or serving clients and need the plan whose terms allow commercial use, which is pay as you go.

Probably not if

  • You need a team to share one Pro subscription, because a plan is for one person and cannot be split or pooled.
  • You expect the $12 plan to cover OpenAI, Anthropic or Google models, since those are charged from the balance instead.
  • You will put confidential files into chats without checking the route, because final retention depends on the provider you pick.

Frequently asked questions

Is NanoGPT the same thing as Karpathy's nanoGPT?

No. Searches for the name mostly return nanoGPT, an open-source code repository by Andrej Karpathy for training small GPT models, and an unrelated photo editor at nanogpt.net. The service described here is the multi-model AI hub at nano-gpt.com operated by NanoGPT LLC. Check the domain before topping up a balance.

Can I share one Pro subscription with my team?

No. The subscription FAQ says a plan is for one person and cannot be shared, split, resold or pooled, and the terms prohibit multiple accounts to get around limits. Teams can instead use the Teams feature, where an owner manages members and a shared balance billed at pay-as-you-go rates.

How do I ask for a refund?

Email support@nano-gpt.com with the support token from Settings, your account email and the reason. The policy, updated September 27, 2026, says first-time requests soon after purchase, duplicate charges and early subscription cancellations are usually approved. Cancelling alone stops future renewals but does not refund the current period.

Does the API work with coding tools and existing OpenAI code?

Yes. NanoGPT offers OpenAI-compatible endpoints and MCP setup for coding tools, so most clients need only a new base URL and key. The subscription FAQ recommends /v1/chat/completions, because the legacy /v1/completions endpoint is supported only on a best-effort basis and depends on the model.

What happens when I hit the weekly Pro limit?

Included usage pauses until the limit resets on Monday at 00:00 UTC. If you switch on "Use balance after limits", requests continue and are charged to your prepaid balance at normal rates instead. Renewing or buying the subscription again mid-week does not reset the weekly counter.

What is NanoGPT used for?

NanoGPT is used to reach many AI models from one account instead of several subscriptions. It offers text models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and open-source providers, plus image, video, 3D and audio generation in Studio, on the web or through an OpenAI-compatible API. You pay list prices from a prepaid balance, or choose the $12 Pro plan for open-source models.

Some third-party pages still describe an older $8 plan with a query count; the current subscription page lists Pro at $12 with a weekly input-token allowance, and only the official page is used. Model names and the included list change often and were read on September 29, 2026. NanoGPT resells access to other providers' models, whose own terms also apply. The terms set a minimum age of 18.
