Speechify Reader is for personal listening; Premium costs $29 a month. Commercial narration requires checking Studio or the separately licensed developer API. API Free lists 500K characters monthly. Premium Reader has a 150,000-word baseline; conflicting dates on the provider page make the advertised larger allowance uncertain.

How far does it go?

  • Plan a workload against the baselineEditorial assumption: an 80,000-word book. A 150,000-word baseline covers one complete reading plus 70,000 words (150,000 / 80,000 = 1.875). This is arithmetic, not a listening test. Do not budget against the advertised larger extension until its conflicting expiry dates are clarified for your account.

Arithmetic from the published allowances above, not a usage test.

Premium allowance conflictThe usage page names a 150,000-word monthly baseline and advertises a 1,000,000-word 2026 extension, but gives contradictory expiry dates.Confirm the active allowance in your account or with support before planning a large workload.
Voice cloning and consentThe API supplemental terms require permission for uploaded voice material and explicit written speaker consent.Use an authorized recording; a paid plan does not replace the speaker permission.

Does a Speechify Premium subscription cover commercial voiceover?

Not under the terms as written. The terms say the services, with the exception of Speechify Voice Over Studio, are not intended for commercial use, and the license they grant is for personal non-commercial use. Studio has a commercial-output exception. The separate API also has supplemental terms that control where they conflict with the general terms. Reader Premium is not proof of a commercial narration license.

That splits the brand into three products with different rules: the Reader app (Free and Premium on the main pricing page), Studio for voice-overs and dubbing, and a separate text-to-speech API. Paying $29 a month for Premium buys listening features, not a commercial audio license. If narration will be published, sold or monetized, check which product produced it.

What do Free and Premium actually include?

Free lists listening at up to 1.5x, 10 voices described as robotic sounding, and text-to-speech features only. Premium is $29 a month billed monthly and lists 1000+ natural voices, 60+ languages, listening at up to 5x, Scan & Listen, AI summaries and chats, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive integrations, voice typing, AI podcasts and a voice AI assistant.

  • Free: the quickest way to hear whether a read-aloud workflow suits you, but the voices are the limiting factor.
  • Premium: adds the natural voices and the AI features; usage of those voices is capped in words per month.
  • The page shows prices per month billed monthly; no yearly price is listed.

Which Premium allowance can you plan around?

The usage policy states a 150,000-word monthly baseline. It also advertises a larger 2026 extension but gives conflicting expiry dates. Check the allowance displayed in your account and ask support to clarify it before buying for a large reading workload.

For an illustrative 80,000-word book, the baseline covers one full reading plus 70,000 words. This is a planning calculation, not a measured listening result.

Where does the API fit?

The API is sold separately on its own plans. Free gives 500K characters a month with commercial use and community support; Starter is $10 a month for 1.9M characters, Pro is $99 for 13.5M and Scale is $499 for 78M, with overage billed per million characters. Voice cloning is listed on paid plans. The API page itself points people looking for the reading app to speechify.com.

The API terms add their own rules: the customer may build the service into its own application so external end users can download generated output, but those end users may not upload their own audio files, and generating training data for other voice models is prohibited.

Which Speechify product should you test before you pay?

Proposed evaluation · not performed yet

Write down what the audio is for, then match it to the table above before choosing a plan.

  1. If the audio is only for you, try Free first and note whether the 10 voices are acceptable.
  2. If it will be published or sold, choose Studio or the separately licensed API and confirm the selected product’s terms and price; do not rely on a Reader subscription.
  3. If a developer will call it, start on the API Free plan and measure characters used on a real script.
  4. Keep a copy of the terms version and date you relied on.

Is Speechify worth it?

Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.

Worth it if

  • You mainly want documents and web pages read aloud for your own study or work, since Reader is licensed for personal use.
  • You want to hear whether a listening habit suits you before paying, because the Free plan costs $0.
  • You are a developer who needs speech with commercial use, as API Free starts at 500K characters a month.

Probably not if

  • You plan to publish or sell narration from a Reader subscription, because the terms do not grant commercial rights for it.
  • You need to size a large reading workload around the advertised larger allowance, since its expiry dates conflict.
  • You want a firm Studio price today, because the plan figures could not be read on the check date.

Frequently asked questions

Is Speechify free?

Yes, in part. The Free plan gives listening at up to 1.5x with 10 voices described as robotic sounding and text-to-speech features only. Premium is $29 a month. A separate API plan includes 500K characters a month at no charge.

How much does Speechify really cost?

Reader Premium is listed at $29 a month billed monthly. API plans run from $10 to $499 a month. Studio prices could not be read on the official site on the check date, so confirm them in your account before buying.

What are the downsides of Speechify?

Free voices are basic, Premium voice use is capped in words per month, the advertised larger allowance has conflicting expiry dates, and the terms limit Reader to personal non-commercial use.

Is there a cheaper alternative to Speechify?

Other text-to-speech tools have different free allowances; compare their free plans, voice quality and commercial rights on the same script rather than on price alone. See the audio category for profiles.

Can I use Speechify audio on YouTube or in a course?

Not with Reader Premium alone, which is licensed for personal non-commercial use. The terms allow Voice Over Studio voice-overs to be used commercially, and API Free lists commercial use with 500K characters a month. Check the terms for the product that produces the audio before publishing.

The pricing page shows only the monthly Premium price; any yearly discount shown in the page's billing toggle was not verified here and is not listed. The Studio pricing page returned no readable text on the check date, so Studio plans are described only from its overview page and the terms. The terms and usage-limits page describe commercial use differently for Reader, Studio and the API; the profile keeps the three separate. The usage-limits page says the 2026 guarantee expires automatically on January 1, 2026, which conflicts with its own 2026 wording; the larger extension is therefore flagged as uncertain rather than resolving that conflict on the provider’s behalf. The API supplemental terms take precedence over conflicting general terms for the API. Independent correction checked 2026-10-04; the API landing page was read at speechify.ai after speechify.com/api returned a fetch error. No rebrand was found: the site is speechify.com and the API console is separate.
