AI contract review, redlining and drafting inside Microsoft Word, priced per seat by quote

Spellbook is a legal AI suite that reviews, redlines and drafts contracts inside Microsoft Word, with Ask for questions, Playbooks for your own standards and Associate for work across several documents. There is no public price list: pricing is per team member on the licence and quoted through a demo. A 7-day free trial exists, and law schools get free academic licences until the end of 2026. Terms say its output is not legal advice.

Strengths, limits and who it suits, in full

Strengths

  • Works where lawyers already edit The Review page puts redlines and comments inside Microsoft Word, so there is no separate document upload step.
  • Your standards, reused The Review page says playbooks save how you want a document reviewed, and the pricing page lists a playbook build service for in-house teams.
  • Review plus research in one place The Ask page says the same workflow covers asking what the law requires, citing the source and applying the answer as a redline.
  • Stated data controls The security page says Spellbook has zero-data-retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and the Terms bar those providers from training on customer data.

Limits

  • No public prices The pricing page shows no amounts; it says pricing depends on the number of team members on a licence and sends you to a demo.
  • Not legal advice Terms section 5.4 says the customer will not rely solely on output as formal legal advice and will have it checked by a licensed lawyer when appropriate.
  • Spellbook may keep a copy for 90 days The Terms let Spellbook keep inputs and outputs for quality assurance for up to 90 days, which is separate from the zero retention it requires of its model providers.
  • Several claims are the vendor's own The 55%, 75% and 30% time-saving figures on the site come from customer quotes or unstated methods, and we do not repeat them as results.

Who it suits

  • Transactional lawyers in firms The pricing page names a Spellbook Suite plan for law firms with group training and online support.
  • In-house legal teams The pricing page lists the same suite for in-house teams plus a playbook build service, and the homepage highlights a Dropbox legal team story.
  • Law students and faculty The academic page offers free licences through the end of 2026.
  • Not for a single occasional contract pricing is quoted per seat after a demo, so a one-off document does not fit the model.

How much does Spellbook cost?

Prices not confirmed · checked

Regional prices: Spellbook shows no price in any currency.

The pricing page says pricing is set by the number of team members on a license and that you book a demo for a quote. The refund policy, read the same day, says monthly subscriptions auto-renew after the trial, monthly cancellation after the trial is not refunded, and annual terms are not refunded; a payment taken after you tell them during the trial that you will not continue is refunded. The pricing page does not say which billing terms (monthly or annual) are offered for which team size, so confirm that in the quote. The pricing and academic pages call the comparison feature Benchmarks, while the feature pages call it Market.

Key features

FeatureWhat it doesWatch out
Review: scans a contract for client risks and drafting errors and proposes redlines and comments in Word; you choose which to apply, and edits appear under your name (Review page)—
Playbooks: save your standing review instructions and reuse them on later documents (Review and pricing pages)—
Draft: writes clauses or whole agreements from scratch or from your saved clause library, detecting contract type, jurisdiction, party details and style (Draft page)—
Ask: answers questions about a contract and, per the Ask page, researches over 1,000 statutes, regulations and legal databases with the source cited, in Word, Google Docs and Spellbook itself—
Market: compares a term with thousands of similar agreements by industry, jurisdiction and deal type; turning an off-market term into a redline is marked Coming Soon (Market page)The Market page says it draws on a live pool of agreements across 80+ countries and hundreds of industries and shows the percentage of deals that use each alternative. The pages give no method for how the pool is built, so the shares are the vendor's own figures.
Associate: an agent that plans and runs tasks across a set of documents, such as dataroom reviews, financing documents or disclosure schedules (Associate page)—
Where it runsThe Review page says redlining happens in Microsoft Word, and the security page says Spellbook is delivered as a Word add-in using Microsoft accounts for single sign-on.The Ask page adds Google Docs and the Spellbook web app for Ask and Associate; the pages do not say whether Review and Draft work outside Word.
LanguagesThe Draft and Ask pages say Spellbook can review, draft and chat in 140+ languages. No page says whether review quality is the same in every language.

What stays your responsibility when Spellbook redlines a contract?

The Review page says Spellbook drafts redlines and comments and that you choose which to apply, with edits appearing under your name. The Terms of Service go further: the customer agrees not to rely solely on output as formal legal advice and to have it vetted by a licensed lawyer when appropriate. Treat suggestions as a first pass that a lawyer signs off, not as a verdict on the contract.

How do you price it when no amounts are public?

The pricing page ties cost to the number of team members on a license and routes you to a demo, so a quote is the only price. Proposed evaluation, not performed: take one of your own standard-form agreements, ask for a trial or demo on it, and compare the redlines with your playbook before asking the quote to cover monthly versus annual terms, since the refund policy allows no refund on annual terms.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Spellbook cost?

Spellbook publishes no prices. The pricing page says cost depends on the number of team members on a license and tells you to book a demo for a quote. It lists a law-firm offer and an in-house offer built on the same Word add-in and Associate suite, and the in-house offer adds a playbook build service.

Is there a free trial of Spellbook?

Yes. The pricing page says lawyers and legal teams can try it free for 7 days, and larger organisations may get an extended trial. The refund policy says monthly subscriptions auto-renew after the trial and that you can cancel during the trial to get back a payment taken after you said you would not continue. Law students and faculty can get free academic licences until the end of 2026.

Does Spellbook store my contracts or train AI on them?

The security page says Spellbook has zero-data-retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and the Terms bar those providers from training on customer data. The Terms also let Spellbook itself keep inputs and outputs for quality assurance for up to 90 days, accessible only to authorised staff. Data is stored in the US and Canada, so check this against your client confidentiality rules.

Does Spellbook work outside Microsoft Word?

Partly. Review is shown in Microsoft Word, and the security page calls Spellbook a Word add-in using Microsoft accounts for sign-in. The Ask page says research is also available in Google Docs and in Spellbook itself for Ask and Associate. The pages do not say Review or Draft run in Google Docs.

Official spellbook.com pages read on 2026-10-17 by direct request: homepage, pricing, the Review, Draft, Ask and Market feature pages, Associate, Integrations, Security, Terms of Service (updated September 17, 2026), Refund Policy and the Academic page. We did not start a trial, book a demo or review a contract. Conflicts and gaps: the comparison feature is called Market on feature pages and Benchmarks on the pricing and academic pages; the homepage promotes an Autonomous Contract Management product (ACM) in early access with a webinar on Oct. 29, which we do not profile because no plan or price is published; and the security page names zero data retention at the model providers while the Terms allow Spellbook itself to keep inputs and outputs for up to 90 days for quality assurance. Customer quotes, the 4.7 rating and the 5,000+ teams figure are the vendor's own and are not repeated as results.
