AI tools for video editing
Trimming speech-led footage, extending shots, cleaning dialogue and translating a finished video are different jobs. This page matches five tools to them and shows which plan removes the watermark or unlocks your export.
This is a source-led shortlist, not a performance ranking. Open each profile for the provider source, verification date and plan conditions.
Tools for ai tools for video editing
Use the profiles below to inspect the specific workflow, pricing and limits before making a choice.
Descript

Runway
Video & editingRunway is a video platform that generates clips from text or images and edits existing footage, with generation billed in credits per second.
Adobe Podcast
Audio & voiceAdobe Podcast is a browser tool for recording, transcribing and cleaning up speech, with Premium features now sold inside the Firefly Pro plan.
Auphonic
Audio & voiceAuphonic is a web service that levels, denoises and loudness-normalizes recorded speech automatically, billed by hours of audio processed.
HeyGen
Video & editingHeyGen turns a script into a video presented by a stock or custom AI avatar and translates existing videos with lip-sync, billed in credits per minute.
How each option fits video editing
Each note comes from the tool's source-checked profile. The condition line is what to confirm before you rely on it for this task.
Descript
Deleting words in the transcript cuts them from the video, and Studio Sound plus filler-word removal handle the audio side of a talking-head edit in the same project.
Check first: Free allows 60 media minutes a month and exports video at 720p with a watermark; Hobbyist (USD 16 per person per month billed yearly, USD 24 monthly) exports 1080p without one.
Runway
Extends and alters footage you already own, removes backgrounds and upscales to 4K, and on paid plans a plugin places generated plates on a Premiere, After Effects or Resolve timeline.
Check first: Free has 125 one-time credits and watermarked output; generation is billed in credits per second, and ProRes or PNG-sequence delivery is limited to Max.
Adobe Podcast
Transcribes a project so audio or video can be cut by editing text, and Enhance Speech removes background noise and echo from recorded dialogue.
Check first: Free Enhance Speech is audio-only with files up to 30 minutes; Enhance Speech on video comes with Firefly Pro (EUR 21.99 per month incl. VAT, Germany), and Podcast Studio needs Chrome on desktop.
Auphonic
Finishes the audio track of a video with leveling, noise and reverb reduction, loudness targets and filler cutting, then merges it back, optionally with burned-in subtitles.
Check first: Free covers 2 hours of processed audio a month and adds an Auphonic jingle; speech recognition is paid, and every production is billed for at least 3 minutes.
HeyGen
Translates an existing recorded video into 175+ languages and dialects, with or without lip-sync, and its AI Studio editor adds captions and B-roll to the result.
Check first: Video translation is on paid plans; Free videos run up to 1 minute with a watermark, and Creator and Pro cannot buy one-time credit packs on the web.
Considered but not listed
- Synthesia: Synthesia builds new presenter videos from scripts, slides or documents rather than editing footage you shot, and its free Basic plan cannot download videos.
- Canva: Canva's profile lists AI video quality tiers and MP4 export inside its design editor, but documents no transcript editing or footage clean-up, so it suits templated clips more than editing a recording.
- ElevenLabs: ElevenLabs dubs the voice track of existing video into other languages but documents no picture editing, and dubbing costs thousands of credits per minute.
What to compare for this task
These questions keep the shortlist tied to the work instead of turning it into a generic feature list.
Footage type
Is your source spoken footage to trim, generated footage to extend, or a finished video to translate?
Budget unit
Does the plan meter media minutes, AI credits, processed hours or credits per second, and which one does your raw footage use up?
Export on your plan
What resolution, watermark status and file format does the plan you will actually pay for export?
Hand-off
Does the edit have to continue in Premiere, Final Cut or Resolve after the AI step?

One fixed task to compare them
Proposed evaluation, not performed: run the same input through two or three shortlisted tools and judge each against the same acceptance line. We have not run it; results depend on your plan and account.
Sample input
Your own 3-minute, single-speaker talking-head clip, recorded near a running fan, containing at least five "um" or "uh" fillers and one false start. Target: a 1080p MP4 with the false start and fillers removed and the fan noise reduced.
Steps
- Import the clip and list which of the three jobs (cuts, noise, export) the tool documents; mark the others "not covered" instead of forcing them.
- Remove the false start and the fillers with the tool's transcript, filler or cut feature.
- Apply the tool's speech clean-up to the whole clip.
- Export at 1080p and record the plan, the watermark status and the minutes, hours or credits used.
- Passes if
- Every covered job holds: no clipped words at any cut, fan noise audibly lower without a metallic voice, and a 1080p file without a watermark on the plan you name.
- Fails if
- A cut lands mid-word, the voice sounds processed, or a watermark or resolution cap only shows up at export.
Questions about ai tools for video editing
Why did a short finished video use most of my Descript allowance?
Descript counts media minutes for what you upload or record, not for the runtime of the finished edit, so a long raw interview cut down to a short clip still uses the full raw length. AI tools such as Studio Sound draw on a separate credit budget, and neither budget rolls over, so size the plan by raw footage.
Can I clean the audio in one tool and finish the picture in another?
Yes. Auphonic merges a cleaned audio track back into the video and offers Adobe Audition and Premiere add-ons. A rough cut made in Descript can continue in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro on Creator or Business, and Runway's plugin places generated shots on a Premiere, After Effects or Resolve timeline on paid plans.
Does translating a finished video need a different tool?
Often. HeyGen translates recorded videos with or without lip-sync on paid plans and adds translation proofreading on Pro. Descript offers translation and dubbing into 30+ languages only on Business. Decide first whether you need new lip movement or only a new voice track, because lip-sync is the requirement that narrows the choice.
Can I edit footage that shows other people or brands?
Runway's profile says recognisable people, trademarks and footage you did not create need extra care, and commercial use depends on your plan's terms. HeyGen requires a consent video before it builds a Digital Twin from someone's footage. Get written permission from people on camera before you alter or translate their appearance or voice.
