Strengths, limits and who it suits, in full

Strengths

  • Capable free tier Free includes Grok 4.6, image generation, voice mode, Grok Build and connectors without a subscription.
  • Live X context Real-time X search surfaces current public posts that general chat assistants may not reach.
  • Same core model on every tier All consumer tiers list Grok 4.6, so upgrades buy limits and features rather than a different core model.

Limits

  • Tier prices split across two pages x.ai/pricing omits Lite and Heavy, which appear only on the grok.com plans page.
  • Broad license over inputs The terms grant SpaceXAI a perpetual, sublicensable license to inputs, including any image, likeness or voice they contain.
  • No-training promise only for business The comparison table reserves its no-training commitment for Business and Enterprise; consumers rely on a settings opt-out.

Who it suits

  • People following live events X search suits tracking breaking news or public reaction, provided claims are checked against primary sources.
  • Casual users on a budget Free covers everyday chat, images and limited search, without video or Expert mode.
  • Creators making short video SuperGrok lists 720p clips of up to 30 seconds; 1080p output needs Plus at $100 a month.
  • Small teams with data rules Business lists a no-training commitment and custom retention that consumer plans do not.

How far does it go?

  • Monthly gap between the two listed tiersSuperGrok Plus at $100 minus SuperGrok at $30 = $70 a month for 1080p video, higher usage and priority access. The pricing page does not publish message, image or video quotas for any tier, so a cost per generation cannot be calculated from public figures.

What does the free Grok plan include, and what is missing?

The comparison table on the x.ai pricing page gives Free the same Grok 4.6 model as paid tiers, plus image generation, the web and mobile apps, Grok Build and connectors. Real-time web and X search is marked Limited rather than included in full. Video generation, Expert mode and Grok Bot are not part of Free.

The page publishes no daily message or image count for any tier. The terms instead reserve the right to apply rate limits at SpaceXAI’s discretion, so the practical free allowance can change without a new price table. Treat Free as a way to test tone, search quality and image style before deciding whether video or Expert mode is worth paying for.

Which SuperGrok tier matches your usage?

The tiers differ mainly in usage headroom, video resolution and extra agents. Editorial assessment: choose SuperGrok when you need video or Expert mode regularly, and only consider Plus if 1080p output or peak-time priority is a working requirement rather than a preference.

  • SuperGrok Lite, $10 a month: video, Expert mode and 2x longer conversations.
  • SuperGrok, $30 a month: Grok Bot, 5x longer conversations, 720p clips of up to 30 seconds and longer voice sessions.
  • SuperGrok Plus, $100 a month: 1080p video, significantly higher usage and priority access.
  • SuperGrok Heavy, $300 a month: highest usage, a larger agent team and X Premium+ included.

What changes when you connect an X account?

Heavy is the only tier that bundles X Premium+ at no extra cost, and the plans page says you claim it by connecting your X account. Signing in with X, Google or Apple lets SpaceXAI access and store information that service shares, which may include access tokens.

Features that send content to X or read content hosted there count as your instruction to share it. The privacy policy says information shared with third parties such as the X platform is then governed by that platform’s own terms. Review what a connector can read before linking a work account.

Who can use what you type, upload or generate?

The terms say you keep ownership of your inputs and outputs, as between you and SpaceXAI. You also grant SpaceXAI an irrevocable, perpetual, sublicensable and worldwide right to use, modify, publish and make derivative works of that content for any purpose, including product improvement and market research. The same grant covers any person’s image, likeness or voice in the content.

When signed in, you can choose whether your content is used to improve products and train models. That is a setting, not a contractual exclusion: the pricing table lists a no-training commitment only for Business and Enterprise. Keep client documents and unreleased work out of consumer Grok unless the opt-out has been set first.

Can you publish Grok images and videos?

Output ownership stays with you under the terms, but two conditions come with it. You may be required to apply, or SpaceXAI may apply, a disclosure that content was generated or altered by AI, and you agree to keep such disclosures. Outputs are not guaranteed to be unique, so another user can receive a similar image.

Uploading a photo or recording of a real person requires all the permissions and consents needed for SpaceXAI to use it, under the same broad license. Use your own likeness, or a person who has agreed in writing, and do not edit images of public figures or private individuals without that consent.

What happens when you cancel or a price changes?

Paid subscriptions renew automatically until cancelled, and cancellation can happen at any time. Payments already made are non-refundable except where the law requires otherwise, and there is no refund if SpaceXAI suspends or terminates an account. If a payment fails, the account may be downgraded or suspended until it is paid.

SpaceXAI may raise prices with reasonable notice in the app or by email, and the new price applies at the next renewal, giving you the chance to cancel first. Disputes are governed by Texas law, with a class action and jury trial waiver where permitted.

Can the free plan produce a sourced brief on a live news topic?

Proposed evaluation · not performed yet

On a signed-in Free account with the training setting chosen in advance, pick a public event from the last 24 hours. Ask Grok for a 150-word brief that links at least three primary sources, such as an official statement or a regulator notice, alongside any X posts it uses.

  1. Record the date, plan and whether search reported a limit.
  2. Request the brief with a rule that every factual sentence needs a link.
  3. Open each link and check that it says what the sentence claims.
  4. Ask one follow-up that separates confirmed facts from reactions on X.
  5. Note any claim that appears only in posts, not in primary sources.

Accept a brief whose every factual sentence is supported by an opened source and whose X reactions are labelled as such. Reject invented quotes, dead links or claims attributed to the wrong account. Leave the observed result blank until the exercise is run.

Is Grok worth it?

Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.

Worth it if

  • You want to follow breaking news or public reaction and will open the primary sources behind any claim, the live X and web search covers that, and Free lets you try it first.
  • You mainly need video and can live with 720p clips, SuperGrok Lite at $10 per month is the lowest listed tier that adds video generation.
  • You want everyday chat and images without paying, Free includes the same Grok 4.6 model as the paid tiers.

Probably not if

  • You handle client files or unreleased work on a consumer account, because the terms grant SpaceXAI a broad license to inputs and the no-training commitment is listed only for Business and Enterprise.
  • You need a predictable cost per image or clip, because no tier publishes message, image or video quotas and the gap between tiers is described only as higher usage.
  • You expect a SuperGrok subscription to cover API work, since the pricing page keeps the API separate and no API credits are stated for consumer plans.

Frequently asked questions

Is Grok free to use?

Yes, Grok has a Free plan at $0. It includes Grok 4.6 chat, image generation, voice mode, Grok Build and connectors, with real-time web and X search marked Limited. Video clips, Expert mode and Grok Bot need a paid tier, and the cheapest listed one that adds video is SuperGrok Lite at $10 per month on the grok.com plans page.

Which Grok model does each consumer plan use?

The x.ai pricing comparison lists Grok 4.6 on every plan from Free to Enterprise on September 29, 2026. The developer documentation lists Grok 4.7 as the latest API model on the same date, so API model names can run ahead of the apps. Recheck both pages before relying on a specific model name in a workflow.

Is API access included in a SuperGrok subscription?

The pricing page places the API under a separate tab, and the consumer terms say developer and business use of SpaceXAI APIs falls under the Enterprise terms. We found no statement that SuperGrok includes API credits. Budget API usage separately through the developer console rather than assuming a consumer plan covers it.

How old do you need to be to use Grok?

The consumer terms set a minimum age of 13, or higher where local law requires it. Users aged 13 to 17 need permission from a parent or legal guardian, who also agrees to the terms. In Australia, SpaceXAI applies age assurance, and adult content may stay unavailable until a user is confirmed to be 18 or over.

Can I use Grok without signing in?

The terms say signed-out use may be available in some places, and that data provided while signed out may be used for product development and model training without an opt-out. Signing in adds the training choice and Private Chat, which keeps conversations out of history and deletes them within 30 days unless the law requires retention.

Will signing up with a work email link me to my employer?

It can. The terms say an account created with an email address from an employer’s domain may be linked to that organization’s Grok Enterprise subscription. The organization’s administrator can then access, monitor and control the account under the Enterprise terms, so use a personal address for private use.

The terms updated September 11, 2026 form an agreement with SpaceXAI LLC, a Nevada company at 800 W Cesar Chavez St., Austin, Texas; the service runs at grok.com and x.ai, and the API documentation at docs.x.ai. x.ai pages blocked plain automated requests and were read in a full browser. The Lite and Heavy prices appear only in the rendered grok.com plans page, captured three times; its text could not be extracted, so the screenshot is the record.
