Strengths, limits and who it suits, in full

Strengths

  • Wide file support Reads PDF, Word, EPUB, PowerPoint and web pages, and OCR handles scans on paid plans.
  • No training on your content The AI use policy says customer content and output are not used to train NaturalSoft or third-party models.
  • Clear refund windows Website purchases of personal plans can be refunded in full within 3 days for monthly and 7 days for yearly billing.

Limits

  • Private listening only The subscription agreement bars sharing or publishing audio from Lite, Plus or Pro, including in videos and podcasts.
  • Short free trial of better voices Free limits Plus AI voices to 5 minutes a day, and MP3, OCR and full AI features need a subscription.
  • Shared quotas on Plus and Pro Cloned voices draw on the same daily listening and monthly MP3 pools as Plus or Pro voices.

Who it suits

  • Students with reading difficulties OCR, highlighted follow-along and a dyslexia font suit reading support, and schools can use EDU licenses.
  • People who listen while commuting the mobile app picks up where the web app stopped, so long documents can be finished away from a desk.
  • Readers who want offline MP3s Lite is the cheapest route to MP3 files, but only with Lite voices.
  • Creators who need voiceovers personal plans do not fit; publishing audio requires the separately licensed Commercial version.

How far does it go?

  • Plus listening versus the monthly MP3 poolPlus allows 500,000 characters a day of listening with Plus voices but 1,000,000 MP3 characters a month with them: 1,000,000 ÷ 500,000 = 2 days of full-rate Plus listening can be saved as MP3 each month. Yearly Lite at $79 against monthly Lite: 12 × $13.90 = $166.80, so yearly billing costs $87.80 less over a year.

What does the free plan actually include?

The plan table on the product page lists Free at $0 with unlimited listening in the free voices, 5 minutes a day of the better Plus AI voices, limited AI features and annotations, with no card required. The features article adds that extended listening, MP3 conversion, OCR for scanned files and full Text Filter controls need a subscription.

The same table ticks Voice Cloning in the Free column, while the pricing article lists cloning only on Plus and Pro and says Lite excludes it. Treat cloning on a free account as unconfirmed until the app offers it. Use Free to check that your files open and that a voice suits you before paying.

Which plan do you need for MP3 files and better voices?

Every paid tier includes MP3 conversion, but each voice tier has its own pool. The tiers differ mainly in which voices can be exported and whether cloning is included:

  • Lite: unlimited listening and 1 million MP3 characters a month, both with Lite voices only; no cloning.
  • Plus: adds Plus voices and up to 2 cloned voices, with 500,000 characters a day of listening and 1 million MP3 characters a month shared between them.
  • Pro: adds the newest HD Pro voices and Reading Styles, which set tone, emotion and accent by prompt; the same shared pools apply.

Choose Lite if Lite voices sound acceptable for your material, since it already gives a full monthly MP3 pool. Pay for Plus only when you need a clone or a noticeably better voice, and Pro when Reading Styles matter.

Can you use NaturalReader audio in a video or podcast?

Not with a personal plan. The subscription agreement says audio from the Personal version may be used only by the authorized user for private listening, and may not be published, embedded, sold or shared with another person. It also excludes videos, podcasts, e-learning, presentations, websites and phone systems, and says even internal or nonprofit redistribution needs a Commercial license.

The checkout page repeats that MP3 files cannot be used for non-personal purposes. EDU audio follows the same rule: a school needs a Commercial license before putting generated audio into lessons, videos or student-facing media.

What are the rules for cloning a voice?

Plus and Pro can clone up to 2 voices from an upload or recording, and the features article limits cloned voices to personal use. The agreement allows cloning only where you have valid legal rights and authorization, and forbids imitating a real person without informed authorization, false endorsements and impersonation.

Clone only your own voice, or that of someone who has agreed in writing to this use. The AI use policy says NaturalSoft may ask for evidence of authorization and may suspend or delete unauthorized voices, so keep that permission on file.

What happens to the documents and recordings you upload?

The AI use policy says customer text, documents, voice samples, cloned voices and generated audio are not used to train NaturalSoft or third-party models. Features may still be processed by providers named in that policy, including Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure Speech, ElevenLabs, OpenAI and Amazon Polly.

Retention figures differ between documents. The features article says your library keeps uploads for up to 1 year and audio for up to 1 month, while the privacy policy lists personal documents as kept for up to two years unless deleted. Delete confidential files yourself when you finish with them rather than relying on either period.

How do refunds and cancellation work?

For personal plans bought on the website, you can ask for a full refund within 3 days of purchase or renewal on monthly billing, or within 7 days on yearly billing. After that there are no prorated refunds. Refunds are not automatic: request one through Account, then Contact Us, or by email.

Plans bought through the App Store or Google Play follow Apple’s or Google’s refund process instead. Subscriptions renew automatically, and after cancelling you keep the plan’s features until the end of the billing period, so cancel before the renewal date if you only needed one cycle.

Can Lite turn a scanned chapter into a clean MP3?

Proposed evaluation · not performed yet

On a Lite monthly plan, use a 20-page scanned chapter of a public-domain book with page numbers, running headers and footnotes. The job needs OCR and MP3 conversion, which the free plan does not include, and stays within Lite voices.

  1. Note the MP3 characters remaining before starting.
  2. Upload the scan, run OCR and fix any misread words with the pronunciation editor.
  3. Turn on the Text Filter for page numbers, headers and footnotes.
  4. Convert the chapter to MP3 with one Lite voice and download it.
  5. Play the file outside the app and record the characters used against the 1 million monthly pool.

Accept an MP3 that reads the chapter in order without page numbers or headers and whose character count matches the text length. Reject skipped columns, read-aloud headers or a file that will not play offline. No audio result is reported until the exercise is run.

For free downloadable speech with a published daily allowance, compare TTSMaker. For voiceovers you are allowed to publish, see Murf or ElevenLabs.

Is NaturalReader worth it?

Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.

Worth it if

  • You mostly want to listen to documents and web pages yourself, because the free plan covers unlimited listening with free voices and needs no card.
  • You need scanned pages or photographed text read aloud, since OCR is included from the Lite plan upward rather than on the free plan.
  • You want MP3 files for offline study, because Lite is the lowest-priced plan that includes an MP3 allowance, using Lite voices only.

Probably not if

  • You plan to publish the audio in videos, podcasts or client work, because the personal plans bar sharing and the Commercial version is licensed separately.
  • You want the better Plus voices for long sessions on the free plan, because they are capped at 5 minutes a day until you subscribe.

Frequently asked questions

Is naturalreader.net the official NaturalReader site?

The official site is naturalreaders.com, with an s, run by NaturalSoft Ltd. of British Columbia. The site at naturalreader.net was registered in 2022, names NaturalReader Limited in its footer and links to a different domain, and naturalreaders.com does not link to it. Buy plans only through naturalreaders.com or the official app stores.

What happened to the Premium plan and Premium voices?

NaturalReader renamed Premium voices to Lite voices. The features article says accounts still on a legacy Premium plan keep full access to the new Lite voices and can find old favourites in the Lite list. On the EDU side, the Lite EDU group license was formerly called Premium, so older quotes may use that name.

Will I pay the same price in the mobile app as on the website?

Not always. The pricing article says prices are in USD but may vary slightly through the App Store or Google Play, because of exchange rates, foreign transaction fees and platform taxes such as VAT. App-store purchases are also refunded by Apple or Google under their rules, not by NaturalSoft.

How much does a school-wide license cost?

The pricing article lists site licenses from $3,300 a year for 2,000 users, and Lite EDU group plans from $599 a year for 50 users. EDU plans are billed yearly only. The school, not NaturalSoft, is responsible for student eligibility, legally required notices and any parent or guardian consent.

Does the mobile app show ads?

The homepage describes the iOS and Android apps as free to download with no ads. They include a camera scanner for printed pages and continue a reading from where you stopped on the computer. Scanning to text uses OCR, which is a subscription feature, so a free account can install the app but not convert photographed pages.

Is NaturalReader actually free?

Partly. The free plan allows unlimited listening with free voices and 5 minutes a day of Plus AI voices, and it needs no credit card. MP3 conversion and OCR are not included on Free; they start with the Lite plan at $13.90 a month or $79 billed yearly. So Free works for listening, while offline audio files and scanned pages need a subscription.
