AI tools for reviewing a small code refactor
Choose chat or editor assistance for a small refactor. Compare access conditions, inspect the diff and run the same behavior checks before accepting a change.
Which tool fits, in short?
Use Cursor or GitHub Copilot if the refactor should happen inside your editor. Cursor's Agent can edit a local file and run a stated command. Copilot works in chat or local agent mode in a supported editor. ChatGPT or Claude fit when you paste one function and want an explained proposal. Chat output does not prove tests ran. Run your own tests before accepting any diff.
This is a source-led shortlist, not a performance ranking. Open each profile for the provider source, check dates and plan conditions.

How each option fits reviewing a small code refactor
Each note comes from the tool's source-checked profile. The condition line is what to confirm before you rely on it for this task.
ChatGPT
Use the assistant to explain a small function, propose a clearer implementation and describe the expected behavior of a supplied test set. Copy the proposal into a disposable local branch for inspection.
Check first: This exercise uses pasted text in chat; repository agents and their plan or execution allowances are a separate choice. Chat output is not evidence that tests ran against your project.
Claude
Discuss a function and its contract in a conversation or project, then ask for a minimal refactor with a line-by-line change explanation. Supplying the original tests gives the assistant a concrete behavior boundary.
Check first: Basic conversation and projects have a Free route with usage limits. Claude Code has separate access conditions; this exercise does not require it or authorize code changes in a production repository.
GitHub Copilot
Keep an existing supported editor and use chat or local agent mode to propose a narrowly scoped refactor. Compare the patch against the original tests before accepting it.
Check first: Free chat and local agent usage are limited. The separate cloud agent requires paid access and can consume both AI Credits and GitHub Actions minutes; it is not required for this local exercise.
Cursor
Use the editor Agent to inspect the local fixture, make a restricted file change and run the stated command. Review the changed lines and preserve an independent Git recovery point.
Check first: Hobby access is limited; stop if the account lacks allowance. Model consumption and paid tiers differ. A checkpoint is not permanent version control, and no cloud delegation is needed for this exercise.
JetBrains AI Assistant
Request a suggestion in AI Chat inside an eligible JetBrains IDE, then inspect and apply the change to the local Python fixture. Use an IDE setup that can run the supplied Python checks; a Java-only setup does not complete this exercise.
Check first: AI Free has a small cloud quota and IDE/license exclusions. Confirm both Python support and AI eligibility before starting; do not assume a free IDE edition includes AI Free. Chat suggestions and command-running agents have different authority.
Considered but not listed
- Gemini Notebook: Its documented source and citation workflow can explain technical documents, but that is not sufficient evidence for a code-refactoring workflow.
- Perplexity: Finding documentation is useful preparation, but the current profile does not establish a behavior-preserving code-refactoring workflow.
- Copy.ai: The profile documents sales and content workflows rather than a suitable code-refactoring workflow; general text generation is not enough for inclusion.

What to compare for this task
These questions keep the shortlist tied to the work instead of turning it into a generic feature list.
Behavior contract
What return value, order and error behavior must remain unchanged?
Diff scope
Does the proposal alter only the requested function without dependencies, network calls or unrelated cleanup?
Local verification
Can you execute tests yourself and compare the actual outputs before accepting the patch?
Context boundary
Did you supply enough code and callers to explain the contract without sharing credentials or unrelated private files?

Head-to-head comparisons for this task
Both tools in each comparison are on this shortlist.
One fixed task to compare them
Proposed evaluation, not performed: run the same input through two or three shortlisted tools and judge each against the same acceptance line. We have not run it; results depend on your plan and account.
Sample input
Use a synthetic Python function that loops over a list of records, skips rows without an email, strips surrounding spaces, lowercases the email and appends it only if not already in the output list. The contract preserves first-seen order; non-string emails are skipped. No network or external packages are needed.
Steps
- Write the original function locally and save its behavior before using any selected tool. Prepare rows: Alice@example.com, spaced alice@example.com, missing email, numeric email 7, bob@example.com, and BOB@example.com.
- Record the tool, editor or chat surface, account tier and available allowance. For editor tools, confirm that this setup can run Python locally. If the required feature or quota is unavailable, stop instead of silently switching to paid access. Use only this fixture; repository-wide and cloud-agent work are separate evaluations.
- Ask for a clearer implementation using a set for membership and a list for stable output order. State that missing and non-string values must be skipped, case is normalized, and unrelated code must not change.
- Request only the function, a diff explanation and proposed tests. Save the assistant and account plan with its response.
- Inspect for changed output ordering, extra dependencies and changed input mutation behavior. Execute both versions against the six-row fixture, an empty list, and a second input ordered as bob@example.com then Alice@example.com in a disposable local environment.
- Keep a review table with input case, original output, proposed output, assertion and reviewer decision. The six-row fixture must produce alice@example.com then bob@example.com; empty input must produce an empty list. The bob-first input must return bob@example.com then alice@example.com, exposing any accidental alphabetical sort.
- Passes if
- The actual locally executed outputs match the contract, input records stay unchanged, the diff is confined to the function and the reviewer can explain the set/list distinction. Assistant-proposed test text is stored separately from actual execution output.
- Fails if
- The refactor sorts or reorders results, crashes on the numeric value, mutates input, adds dependencies, or claims tests passed without an execution record.

Questions about reviewing a small code refactor with AI
What if the original function already has a bug?
Separate the bug fix from the refactor. First record the current behavior and decide which behavior should change, then approve an explicit correction with its own test. Calling both changes a refactor hides the decision and makes it harder to tell whether a different output was intended.
Can this exercise prove a tool is suitable for a whole codebase?
No. A short function does not exercise repository discovery, dependency constraints, integration tests or deployment behavior. For a larger change, define the allowed files, run the real project checks and have a maintainer review the patch. Keep the small exercise as an initial screening step rather than a benchmark score.
How do I compare the proposals without rewarding longer answers?
Compare the inspected diff and actual behavior, not the amount of explanation. Note whether each proposal meets the same contract, stays within the requested scope and leaves a maintainable result. A concise change that passes your checks is more useful than a verbose rewrite with unrelated improvements.
Is AI good at refactoring code?
It can help with a small, well-defined refactor, but this exercise does not rate any tool. You supply the behavior contract and the original tests, and the assistant proposes a clearer version of one function. Treat the result as a proposal: run both versions yourself, inspect the diff and accept it only if the actual outputs match.
What does refactor mean in AI coding?
It means asking an assistant to restructure existing code while keeping its behavior the same. In this exercise, the return value, output order and error handling must stay unchanged, and the diff should touch only the requested function. A change that fixes a bug, adds dependencies or reorders results is a different edit and needs its own decision.
