Repository edits with a reviewable change boundary

Cursor is an AI code editor whose Agent can inspect files, edit a repository and run commands. It suits developers who want an integrated implementation workflow and can review the resulting diff. Hobby offers limited access; paid plans add capacity and team options. Evaluate it with a small behavior-preserving change before delegating a larger refactor.

Teams and Enterprise add a USD 0.25-per-million-token Cursor Token Rate for third-party models, including included, on-demand and bring-your-own-key usage; direct selection and Auto routing both count. Cursor first-party models are exempt. Optional on-demand model usage also costs extra. Regional offers, including the India-only Start plan, have different terms; confirm billing period and account eligibility. On 2026-10-17 Cursor's own pages disagreed: the pricing page text we retrieved lists the individual plans above, while a documentation page and a direct page request listed Free, Plus (USD 8), Premium (USD 30), Super (USD 100) and Ultra (USD 200) with Teams at USD 30, 100 or 200 per seat. Which structure applies may depend on account or region, so confirm plan names and amounts on Cursor's pricing page before buying.

How far does it go?

  • Two Standard base seats2 users × USD 40 per user per month = USD 80 monthly in base seat fees, before tax and applicable model/token charges. The Teams third-party Cursor Token Rate can apply even within included usage. This is not a total bill or a prediction of completed refactors.

Can a refactor stay small enough to review?

Cursor Agent can inspect a repository, change files and run terminal commands. The practical decision is how much authority to give it in one request: extracting a helper is easier to verify than combining that extraction with a dependency upgrade and a directory reorganization. Specify the allowed files, preserved public interface and one test command before asking for edits.

Which changes should stay outside the first patch?

A useful first boundary is behavioral preservation: callers should observe the same values, errors and side effects after the refactor. Ask for a file-by-file plan before implementation, then reject unrelated formatting or configuration edits even if they look harmless. A small diff lets you identify whether a failed test comes from the requested change or from additional work.

  • Record the original test command and exit status.
  • List the exported names and error messages that must stay stable.
  • Allow one helper extraction, with no dependency changes.
  • Review the diff before accepting or committing it.

Where should repository instructions live?

Project rules in .cursor/rules can be versioned with the repository; AGENTS.md offers a simpler instruction format. Keep instructions specific enough to check: name the test command and forbidden generated directories instead of asking for clean code. When two modules have different conventions, scope the rule to the relevant paths so the agent receives the appropriate context.

When does a paid plan solve the actual bottleneck?

Start with Hobby to check whether the editing workflow fits your repository, then consider Pro for sustained individual use. Choose Teams when centralized administration or team privacy enforcement is the requirement; a more expensive individual tier addresses a different problem. Measure the usage consumed by a representative task before deciding that a larger allowance will pay for itself.

Pro, Pro Plus and Ultra have separate Cursor Models and Other Models usage pools. Model choice changes consumption, so a subscription price cannot be translated into a reliable number of completed refactors. Record the selected model, starting balance, final balance and accepted files; a large generated patch that you discard still matters to the cost of the task.

Does Privacy Mode remove the need for a data decision?

Cursor says Privacy Mode prevents training on your data and makes that setting available to free and paid users. For a repository containing customer information, first decide which files may be supplied to the service and which commands may touch external systems. Training policy, network access and permission to process a particular repository are separate decisions.

How should a failed edit be recovered?

Cursor checkpoints can revert agent file changes, but they are separate from Git and are not a permanent version history. Begin an evaluation from a clean branch and commit the baseline before handing over the first task. If the agent changes a generated file or removes a meaningful assertion, inspect the affected diff and restore the specific change instead of accepting a broad rewrite just because the suite turns green.

A task to evaluate before choosing

Proposed evaluation · not performed yet

Use an owned, local JavaScript fixture with two functions that normalize an optional label using trim and lowercase. On Hobby, check that Agent access and remaining usage are available; stop if the account cannot run the task. Ask Cursor to extract the duplicated normalization into one helper without changing exports, mutating input objects or adding dependencies.

  1. Create tests for a normal label, surrounding spaces, an empty string and a missing label.
  2. Run the tests before editing; keep their names and expectations unchanged.
  3. Request only the extraction, then inspect each changed line.
  4. Run the same tests and inspect the package manifest and public exports.
  5. Accept only if behavior and tests are preserved, duplication is removed and the diff contains the requested files. Fail if assertions are weakened, unrelated files change or a limit prevents completion.

Keep a short decision record with the model, access tier, elapsed review time and corrections you made yourself. Compare that record with doing the same extraction using your current editor; do not judge only by how quickly the first patch appeared. A candidate that generates more code but requires longer review may be a poor fit for this narrow maintenance task.

If the task is to explain a pasted function before choosing an editor, compare the ChatGPT and Claude profiles. They describe a different starting workflow. Our editorial policy separates provider documentation from a completed hands-on evaluation.

Is Cursor worth it?

Documentation review plus dated public user reports. Documentation review, not tested hands-on. Not scored.

Worth it if

  • You code most days and Hobby's limited Agent access runs out before your normal work does.
  • Your repository has tests and clear boundaries, so Agent diffs can be reviewed and accepted quickly.
  • You are comfortable routing routine tasks to cheaper models so the included allowance lasts the month.

Probably not if

  • You want frontier third-party models all day; consumption varies by model and can push you toward costlier tiers.
  • Your organization needs fixed costs; Teams adds a per-token rate on third-party models in addition to seat prices.
  • You already pay for another coding agent and only need occasional help that Hobby covers.

Frequently asked questions

Can Cursor run on Linux?

The download page provides Linux packages alongside Windows and macOS builds. Choose the package and CPU architecture that match your machine, then check your project toolchain separately. Installing the editor does not install every compiler, database or test dependency that an agent may need to run your repository.

What should I check before enabling on-demand usage?

Look at the usage dashboard and identify which model pool is exhausted before enabling additional spending. On-demand consumption is billed separately from the subscription. For a shared budget, establish who may authorize extra usage and record that decision before allowing a long-running task to continue.

Can two developers share one Teams seat?

Budget per user rather than treating a shared project as one seat. The listed Standard rate is a base subscription for each user. Two seats exclude tax and applicable model charges; third-party requests also incur the Cursor Token Rate, even for included usage. Check your team settings before estimating a total bill.

What if the suggested test command cannot run?

Capture the error and fix the environment before using a green or red test outcome to judge the edit. A missing package, absent service or incorrect working directory is not evidence about code behavior. Keep environment repairs separate from the refactor so the comparison remains interpretable.

Should I accept a patch that passes only new tests?

Inspect whether existing assertions were preserved and whether the new cases exercise meaningful boundaries. A generated test can repeat the same mistaken assumption as the generated implementation. Add a counterexample derived from the original contract, and review the exported behavior before deciding that the patch is acceptable.
