InferKit Alternatives After the Shutdown: Where to Move Your Text Generation
InferKit and its predecessor, Talk to Transformer, no longer generate text, and there is no plan left to buy. This guide matches five live tools to the three ways people used InferKit: continuing text in the browser, extending a draft in an editor, and calling an API from code. It also shows what changes when you move: the prompt, the key and the unit you pay in.

The short answer
Continued stories in the browser at no cost? ChatGPT Free has no cap on text chats with its basic model, and Claude Free includes chat, Artifacts and up to five projects. Both need an instruction, not just the passage.
Pressed a key to extend text in an editor? Copy.ai’s Chat editor extends text from the cursor when you press Tab, on the paid Chat plan shared by five seats.
Called InferKit from your own code? The OpenAI API and the Claude API are billed by usage, apart from the chat subscriptions. Jasper’s API needs Business, and Copy.ai’s Workflows API needs Enterprise.
What happened to InferKit, and what did it do?
What the record shows
In shortThe service closed between late March and early April 2024, judging by two archived captures. The notice gives no date.
The homepage at inferkit.com now carries only a discontinuation notice: “As AI has advanced during the last few years, InferKit’s AI-based writing app has become outdated.” It says paid subscriptions were cancelled and the last payment refunded, and it lists one contact address, contact@inferkit.com. There is no sign-in link and no export page.
The notice has no closing date. The Internet Archive narrows it: the copy from 2024-03-24 still offers “a web interface and API for AI-based text generators”, and the copy from 2024-04-04 already shows the notice. Some summaries name a single month or a later year; without a first-party date, this guide keeps to that window.
Talk to Transformer came first. An archived request from 2020-09-06 shows talktotransformer.com answering with a permanent redirect to the InferKit demo, and the domain still forwards to inferkit.com. Neither address can generate text, sign you in or return earlier documents.

What InferKit did that chat assistants do differently
In shortInferKit continued whatever text you gave it. Today’s assistants follow instructions, so the passage alone is no longer enough.
InferKit was a continuation engine. Its archived API documentation described the prompt as context and said the response returns what the network thinks comes next, up to 1,000 characters per request. There was no instruction to follow: you pasted the start of a story or article and got more of it. The web editor added experimental topic and keyword controls on top of the same idea.
ChatGPT, Claude and the other tools below are built to follow instructions in a conversation. Paste half a paragraph with no instruction and the reply may be a summary, feedback or a question rather than a continuation. The billing unit changed as well: InferKit sold generated characters, Basic at USD 20 a month for 600,000 and Premium at USD 60 for 2,500,000 on the archived pricing page, and unused characters did not roll over.

What you can still recover
In shortOnly what you already kept. A move starts from your own files.
- From the service: nothing new. With no sign-in or export page, documents that stayed in an InferKit account cannot be fetched from the site.
- From your own copies: saved prompts, outputs you copied out, and any code that called the API are what a migration actually moves.
- From lookalike sites: nothing safe to assume. A site that runs “Talk to Transformer” under another address is a separate service with its own terms.
Which InferKit alternative fits the way you used it?
The five alternatives at a glance
In shortRead across a row. The API and the free route differ more between these tools than the entry prices do.
| Tool | Free access | Entry paid plan, as listed | Extends text in an editor | API | Usage counted in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free: unlimited text chats with the basic model | Plus: USD 20 per month, monthly only | Not covered in the sources checked | Separate OpenAI API, billed by usage | Plan limits on messages and features | |
| Free: chat, web search, Artifacts, up to five projects | Pro: USD 17 per month billed yearly as USD 200, USD 20 billed monthly | Artifacts open beside the chat for editing | Separate Claude API, at API rates | A five-hour session allowance inside a weekly cap | |
| No free plan | Chat: USD 24 per month billed annually as USD 288, USD 29 billed monthly | Chat editor: press Tab to extend | Workflows API on Enterprise | Unlimited words in Chat | |
| 7-day trial, credit card required | Pro: USD 59 per month billed yearly, USD 69 billed monthly | Canvas AI toolbar for rewriting and summarizing | API and MCP server on Business | Workspace credits for advanced features, Business only | |
| Free: 15 messages a day with GPT-5.6 Luna | Pro: $10 per month billed monthly, or $96 billed yearly | Not covered in the sources checked | Not covered in the sources checked | Credits: 8,000 weighted tokens each |

What to check before you move
In shortFive checks, in the order an InferKit move usually fails them.
- The tool takes your passage as an instructionEvery tool here expects a request. A saved InferKit prompt needs a sentence in front of it that says “continue this”.
- The free route fits the useYesChat Free carries no commercial license, Jasper starts with a card-backed trial, and Copy.ai has no free plan at all.
- The API sits on a plan you can buyOpenAI and Anthropic bill their APIs apart from ChatGPT and Claude plans; Jasper keeps its API on custom-priced Business and Copy.ai on Enterprise.
- You know the new unitCharacters are gone. Plans count messages, session allowances, words, credits or tokens; see the unit table below.
- Your text can leave the toolJasper downloads .docx, .pdf, .txt or .md files; Copy.ai documents a text export without a named file format.
Pick by how you used InferKit
| If you used InferKit for… | Start with | On which plan |
|---|---|---|
| Continuing a story in the browser at no cost | ChatGPT or Claude | The free plan of either; a continuation request is an ordinary prompt |
| Extending a draft from the cursor inside an editor | Copy.ai | Chat, the entry plan; the Tab action lives in its Chat editor |
| Marketing copy that should sound like one brand | Jasper | Pro, after the 7-day trial; up to 2 Brand Voices |
| Seeing how several models continue one passage | YesChat | Pro; Free runs only GPT-5.6 Luna |
| Calling a text API from your own code | OpenAI API or Claude API | Usage-billed developer accounts, separate from any chat plan |
For which free plans let you keep and publish what you generate, see the free AI tools guide.
The alternatives, tool by tool
In shortSame layout for each: what it does, what it takes over from InferKit, what changes and what you can bring.
If you need free continuation in a browser: ChatGPT
Best for continuing text at no cost, with a separate API for code
- Free unlimited text chats with the basic model
- Entry Plus, USD 20 per month monthly only
ChatGPT is an assistant for drafting, files and web research. On Free, text chats with the basic model have no cap, while uploads, image generation, voice, deep research and memory are limited. Plus adds advanced reasoning, expanded uploads, deep research, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs.
What it does
- Drafting and revision
- Draft or revise from a brief and source material, then ask for focused changes.
- Projects
- Chats, files and instructions for one job stay together, and project instructions apply across the project’s chats.
- File creation
- Documents, presentations, spreadsheets or PDFs, refined with targeted feedback.
- OpenAI API
- A separate developer product, billed by usage.
Takes over from InferKit
Free continuation in the browser. Put your continuation rule in a project’s instructions once, and every chat in that project starts from it.
What changes for you
The assistant answers instructions rather than extending raw text. Plan, platform, region, rollout status and workspace settings decide when a feature reaches your account, and the API is not part of any ChatGPT plan.
What carries over
Saved passages as text, and the instruction pattern from the prompt section below.

If you need room for long passages: Claude
Best for long drafts edited beside the chat
- Free chat, Artifacts, up to five projects
- Entry from USD 17 per month Pro, billed yearly as USD 200; USD 20 billed monthly
Claude Free includes chat, web search, file creation, code execution, Artifacts and up to five projects. Anything substantial Claude writes opens beside the conversation as an Artifact you can edit and return to. Paid plans reach a context window of up to 1M tokens on the newest models. Paid use is counted in a session allowance that resets every five hours, inside a weekly cap, even on Max 20x.
What it does
- Projects
- Instructions set once apply to every chat in the project; Free allows five projects.
- Artifacts
- Long pieces open beside the chat, where you edit them and come back later.
- File creation
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files on every plan.
- Claude API
- A separate REST API, billed at API rates through a Console account.
Takes over from InferKit
Continuation of long passages in the browser, and API calls from code through the Claude API.
What changes for you
Pro and Max cover the apps and Claude Code, not the API. On the API, Claude 4.6 and later models return an error for a prefilled reply, so the text to continue goes into the user message instead.
What carries over
Saved passages and the continuation rule, kept as project instructions.

See the Claude profile for plans, limits and sources.

If you need a key that extends text in an editor: Copy.ai
Best for a Tab-to-extend editor shared by up to five people
- Free no free plan
- Entry USD 24 per month Chat, billed annually as USD 288; USD 29 billed monthly
Copy.ai Chat prompts OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini models in one interface and hands a response to an editor. Its help page says that placing the cursor at the end of a sentence or paragraph and pressing Tab makes Chat elaborate and extend the text, which is the closest match here to the old InferKit editor. The Chat plan covers 5 seats with unlimited words.
What it does
- Chat editor
- Rewrite a selected passage, extend text, see word and character counts, export the text.
- Model switching
- A conversation can move between model families midway.
- Brand Voice and Infobase
- A tone profile built from pasted samples, and text documents pulled into a prompt with a #tag.
- Workflows API
- API access and bulk workflow runs, on Enterprise.
Takes over from InferKit
The editor habit: write, put the cursor at the end, extend.
What changes for you
There is no free plan, refunds apply only within five days of the first purchase, and a sixth writer moves the team to Growth at USD 12,000 a year. No PDF or Word export of generated text is documented.
What carries over
Drafts as text; reference notes you used as topics can go into Infobase as text documents.

If you need marketing copy in a stored brand voice: Jasper
Best for marketing drafts that follow saved voice, audience and product facts
- Free 7-day trial, credit card required
- Entry from USD 59 per month Pro, billed yearly; USD 69 billed monthly
Jasper is a marketing workspace. Pro is one seat with Canvas, Chat, marketing agents, 2 Brand Voices, 5 knowledge assets and 3 Audiences. Canvas organises briefs and drafts with an AI toolbar for rewriting and summarizing, and finished assets download as .docx, .pdf, .txt or .md files. The API and the MCP server need Business, which is priced by sales.
What it does
- Canvas
- Briefs, drafts and images on an infinite canvas or in a table view.
- Brand Voice
- Up to 8 text samples, files or URLs turned into a voice description for Chat, agents and the editor.
- Writing apps
- A Word add-in, a Google Docs add-on and a Chrome and Edge extension.
- API
- API and MCP calls charged in workspace credits, on Business.
Takes over from InferKit
Marketing drafts that should keep one voice, written in Jasper or inside Word and Google Docs.
What changes for you
The trial rolls into a paid plan unless cancelled, and after a 7-day window an annual plan cannot be cancelled. The Business credit allowance is not published, so API cost is hard to estimate before a sales call.
What carries over
InferKit outputs you liked can serve as Brand Voice samples, up to 8 per voice.

If you need several models on one passage: YesChat
Best for running one passage through several model families under one balance
- Free 15 messages a day, GPT-5.6 Luna
- Entry $10 per month Pro, billed monthly; $96 billed yearly
YesChat puts models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and DeepSeek behind one credit balance. Free gives 15 messages a day with GPT-5.6 Luna, without a commercial license, on one device. Pro adds 1,000 credits a month, Claude, Gemini, Grok and DeepSeek models, and a commercial license.
What it does
- Model choice
- Switch providers without separate subscriptions; Opus 5 needs Ultra.
- Credit receipts
- Each reply shows its weighted tokens and credits; failed requests cost 0 credits.
- Credit metering
- 8,000 weighted tokens make 1 credit, with a 10-credit cap per message; flagship models count double.
- Agent mode
- Reads PDF, Word, Excel or CSV files and searches the web with citations.
Takes over from InferKit
Comparing how several models continue the same passage from one account.
What changes for you
The terms grant the operator a worldwide, perpetual license to submitted content, including publication to others: weigh that before pasting unpublished fiction. Refunds are limited to 3 days and to accounts that used no more than 20% of their credits.
What carries over
Passages and the instruction pattern. For commercial use, the paid plan has to be active when the text is made.

What an InferKit budget becomes in each tool’s unit
In shortInferKit counted generated characters. None of the five does, so translate your old budget before you compare prices.
From characters to tokens, messages and credits
OpenAI’s token guide gives a rough English rule of about 4 characters per token. By that rule, the 600,000 characters of the old Basic plan come to about 150,000 output tokens a month, and one 1,000-character InferKit request to about 250. Other languages divide differently, and reasoning models also bill hidden reasoning tokens as output, so treat it as an estimate.
| Tool | Unit | What the old Basic budget looks like there |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI API, Claude API | Tokens, billed by usage | About 150,000 output tokens a month, priced at each vendor’s API rates |
| ChatGPT | Plan limits on messages and features | Free has no cap on text chats with the basic model; Plus expands uploads and adds deep research |
| Claude | A session allowance that resets every five hours, inside a weekly cap | No character count; Max 5x and Max 20x multiply Pro’s per-session allowance |
| Copy.ai | Words in Chat | Unlimited words in Chat, from the Chat plan up |
| Jasper | Credits for advanced features on Business | No word allowance listed on Pro |
| YesChat | Credits: 8,000 weighted tokens each, 10 at most per message | Pro’s 1,000 credits equal 8,000,000 weighted tokens at the 1x rate; the profile does not say how tokens are weighted |
Arithmetic on the units in each profile and on the archived InferKit pricing page.
A year on each, against InferKit Basic
In shortTwelve months for one person on the entry paid plan, before tax. InferKit Basic was USD 240 a year at USD 20 a month.
| Tool | Entry plan, yearly billing | Same plan, paid monthly for 12 months |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Not offered for individuals | Plus: USD 240 (12 × 20) |
| Claude | Pro: USD 200, paid up front | Pro: USD 240 (12 × 20) |
| Copy.ai | Chat: USD 288, for up to 5 seats | Chat: USD 348 (12 × 29) |
| Jasper | Pro: USD 708, a 12-month commitment | Pro: USD 828 (12 × 69) |
| YesChat | Pro: $96 | Pro: USD 120 (12 × 10) |
Worked from the plan prices on each profile. Copy.ai’s USD 288 shared by 5 seats is USD 57.60 per seat.

How to move prompts, outputs and API calls
What moves, and what has to be rebuilt
In shortA move carries text you still hold. Settings and code are rebuilt in the new tool.
| What you had | Does it move? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Saved prompts and passages | Yes, as text | Collect them in one file, each with the output you kept, if any. |
| Outputs you liked | Yes, as text | Keep them as the reference for the trial below; in Jasper they can also seed a Brand Voice. |
| Documents left in the InferKit editor | No | Only what you copied out survives; the notice offers no download page. |
| Length, topic and keyword settings | Only as instructions | Write them into the prompt; see the mapping below. |
| Code calling api.inferkit.com | No | Replace the endpoint, key and request shape; calls to the old host now fail. |
| A monthly character budget | No | Re-estimate it in tokens, messages or credits with the unit table above. |
Rewrite a continuation prompt for an instruction-following model
In shortWrap the passage in an instruction that says where to start, what to return and how long it should be.
- State the task: “Continue the text below from its last word.”
- Restrict the output: “Return only the continuation, with no title, summary or comments.”
- Set the length in words, not characters, for example “about 150 words”.
- Fix the voice: point of view, tense and whether dialogue is allowed.
- Paste the passage last, between clear markers such as three dashes.
| InferKit setting | What replaces it |
|---|---|
| length | A word target in the prompt, or a maximum output token setting in an API |
| startFromBeginning | A sentence such as “This is the opening of a new document titled …” |
| forceNoEnd | No direct setting: write “Do not bring the story to a close” |
| Topic and keyword controls | A line listing the words the continuation must include |
| temperature and topP | In a chat app, regenerate or ask for a plainer or bolder style; in an API, check which sampling settings the model accepts |
Keep the instruction and the passage in one message. If the reply starts by repeating your last sentence, add “Do not repeat any of the given text” instead of trimming by hand each time.
Move InferKit API calls without a prefill trick
In shortSend the passage with an instruction to a current endpoint, and keep the provider behind one function you control.
Search code, environment variables and scheduled jobs for api.inferkit.com. The documented endpoint was /v1/models/standard/generate, called with a prompt and fields such as length, streamResponse and forceNoEnd. Those requests now fail, so check whether an app has been serving empty or cached text since the service closed.
OpenAI still documents a Completions endpoint that takes a raw prompt and returns predicted text, but its API reference files it under Legacy, and the text generation guide points new work to the Responses API, where the continuation instruction goes into the input. Porting to the legacy endpoint keeps the old request shape while tying new code to an interface the provider has moved away from.
Anthropic’s prompting guide says that from Claude 4.6 models, a partial assistant message on the last turn is no longer supported and returns a 400 error. That rules out pre-filling the start of Claude’s reply so it carries on your text; the passage goes into the user message with a request to pick up where it ends.

Put generation behind one internal function that takes the passage, a length target and a model name, and store every output with the prompt that produced it. The next provider change then touches only that function and a model mapping table.

Questions, limits and how this guide was made
Common questions
Is InferKit discontinued?
Yes. The inferkit.com homepage now shows only a discontinuation notice, which says the AI writing app had become outdated, that paid subscriptions were cancelled and that the last payment was refunded. Archived copies place the closure between March 24 and April 4, 2024. There is no plan to buy, no sign-in and no way left to generate text on the site.
What are some free alternatives to InferKit?
ChatGPT Free allows unlimited text chats with its basic model, Claude Free adds Artifacts and up to five projects, and YesChat Free gives 15 messages a day with one model but no commercial license. None of them carries on a bare passage the way InferKit did, so open each request with a short instruction that asks for a continuation.
Is there another website that still runs Talk to Transformer?
Not from the original developer. The talktotransformer.com domain forwards to the InferKit notice, so a site offering Talk to Transformer under another address is a separate service with its own terms. Check who operates it, what model it uses and how it handles your text before pasting unpublished writing or entering payment details there.
Can I get back stories I wrote in the InferKit editor?
The notice offers no download page, and archived copies of the site only hold public pages, not private documents. Look first in your own files, browser history exports and any text you copied out while the service ran. The only address the notice lists is contact@inferkit.com, which is the place to ask about data that was stored in an account.
Which OpenAI models does the legacy Completions endpoint accept?
The API reference lists gpt-3.5-turbo-instruct, davinci-002 and babbage-002 as model options for that endpoint, alongside a generic model ID field. These are older models, so output style and length control will differ from InferKit. Use the endpoint for a quick port only if you accept that newer OpenAI models are documented for the Responses API instead.
Will I be billed again for an old InferKit subscription?
According to the notice, paid subscriptions were cancelled and the last payment was refunded when the service closed. A later charge carrying the InferKit name would not match that statement. In that case, email the address given on the notice and ask your card issuer about the charge, keeping a screenshot of the notice with the date you viewed it.
What this guide does not judge
Lists for this search often rank tools on how natural or creative their continuations read. None of the profiles documents writing quality, style or speed in a way we can check, and we have not run your passages through them, so this guide compares the free route, the editor, the API and the billing unit. Sudowrite, Rytr and NovelAI appear on other InferKit lists; this site has no profile for them, so they are not compared here. The writing category lists the drafting tools that do have one.
Take three prompts you actually ran in InferKit, ideally with the outputs you kept. Prompt A is a 150-word story opening. Prompt B is a headline that should start a new article, standing in for startFromBeginning. Prompt C is a product description that must include three named keywords. Run each with the instruction pattern above on the free plans of ChatGPT, Claude and YesChat, noting the model shown and the remaining allowance before each run.
- Does the reply start at the last word of the passage, with no restated sentence or preface?
- Is the length within about 20% of the word target?
- Are point of view and tense unchanged, and does Prompt C contain all three keywords?
- How many messages did each prompt take, including one correction?
- Can you copy the text out without formatting you would have to strip by hand?
Accept a tool when all three prompts pass on the plan you intend to use. Copy.ai’s Tab editor and Jasper’s Canvas sit behind a paid plan or a card-backed trial, so check them as a separate step, and confirm commercial rights before publishing anything.
How this guide was made
Shutdown facts come from the InferKit notice and Internet Archive copies of inferkit.com and talktotransformer.com. API migration facts come from OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s documentation and Copy.ai’s help pages. Plans, units, limits and rights come from the ChatGPT, Claude, Copy.ai, Jasper and YesChat profiles on this site, which cite each vendor’s pricing, help and terms pages and carry their own check dates; plan charts are read from those profiles when the page loads. Sections follow the topics the top-ranking InferKit alternative pages cover, limited to what the vendors document. No rating is given. See our editorial policy.
