How to choose tools for research & sources

Start by deciding where your evidence lives. For current information on the open web, Perplexity builds each answer from live pages and links every one of them. General assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT also search the web with citations, so a search-first tool earns its place through features like daily Pro Searches, Research mode and scheduled Tasks. For published studies, Elicit and Consensus search academic papers instead of the web, and for a fixed set of documents you already hold, Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) answers only from the sources you add, with inline citations.

The paper tools differ in what they hand back. Elicit pulls study details such as design, population and outcomes into tables with a quote behind each value, and its Systematic Review workflow screens up to 5,000 papers on Pro. Consensus answers a question from the literature: a Deep review splits it into sub-questions, screens over 1,000 papers and typically analyzes up to 50. Consensus marks which citations were read in full text; the rest were read from the abstract only.

Each tool meters a different thing, which matters more than the headline price. Perplexity Free allows 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month; Consensus Free allows 10 Pro messages and up to 3 Deep reviews a month; Gemini Notebook Standard caps each notebook at 50 sources; Elicit keeps paper search unlimited on every plan but gives no number for its shared monthly usage pool.

Start with the evidence you need

For web questions, read the Perplexity profile; for published studies, compare the Elicit and Consensus profiles; for your own documents, see Gemini Notebook. For a choice spanning research and writing, read Claude vs Perplexity alongside the Claude profile and the ChatGPT profile. The writing category covers turning checked material into a draft.

A source-focused notebook can also help discover material: distinguish sources already selected for an answer from discovery or Deep Research that brings in new material. Review newly added documents before treating the notebook as a closed evidence set. See the NotebookLM / Gemini Notebook profile for the available routes.

What to compare before you pick one

  • Where it searchesOpen web (Perplexity), academic papers (Elicit, Consensus) or only the documents you upload (Gemini Notebook): match the tool to where your evidence lives.
  • Which limit you will hitPerplexity and Consensus count deep research runs per month, Gemini Notebook caps sources per notebook, and Elicit draws on a shared pool whose size it does not publish.
  • Full text or abstractFor paper tools, check whether a cited study was read in full: Consensus marks full-text citations with a checkmark, and Elicit's Premium PDF parsing, not offered on Basic, handles tables and figures better.
  • Export formatElicit exports reports to PDF or Word on every plan and tables from Plus; Consensus exports CSV, RIS or formatted bibliographies; Perplexity Research reports export to PDF or a document.
  • Academic pricingPerplexity Education Pro costs USD 10 a month, Consensus gives students and faculty up to 40% off, and Elicit's Academic plans cost less than its Industry plans for the same tier.

Our editorial judgement about what matters in this category, based on the plan structures we documented while building these profiles.

Where buyers get caught out

  • Perplexity Free allows only 1 Research query a month, so a weekly report needs a paid plan.
  • Consensus Deep reports cite only a selection of the papers they analyzed, and a citation without a checkmark was read from the abstract alone.
  • Elicit's Find Papers and Paper Chat tables need Plus to export, and Systematic Review tables need Pro or higher.
  • Gemini Notebook switched to compute-based limits on September 2, 2026: long chats and heavy Studio features use more of a quota that refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly limit.
  • Elicit is optimized for English-language research, and quality in other languages varies.
  • Perplexity's developer API and Consensus API calls beyond the included amount are billed separately from the subscription.

Questions about research & sources tools

How do research tools differ from ChatGPT or Claude?

Claude and ChatGPT also search the web with citations, so web access alone is not the difference. Research tools differ in where they look and what they return: Elicit and Consensus search academic papers and extract or synthesize study results, Gemini Notebook stays inside the documents you add, and Perplexity adds search-first features such as daily Pro Searches, Research mode and scheduled Tasks.

Which research tools are free?

All four have a free plan. Perplexity Free covers basic search with citations and 3 Pro Searches a day; Elicit Basic has unlimited paper search and summaries with report downloads; Consensus Free has unlimited paper search, 10 Pro messages and up to 3 Deep reviews a month; Gemini Notebook Standard allows 100 notebooks of up to 50 sources and 10 Deep Research runs a month.

Which tool fits a literature review?

Elicit fits when you must screen papers and extract data into columns: Pro screens up to 5,000 papers with 20 columns. Consensus fits when you want a synthesized answer across studies, with 15 Deep reviews a month on Pro and 200 on Deep. Gemini Notebook fits when you already hold the papers and need cited answers from them.

Can I trust the citations?

A citation points to the passage an answer used, but the summary can still misread it. Elicit warns that complex tables can be missed, Consensus reads some papers from the abstract only, and Google warns that Audio Overviews may contain inaccuracies. Open the cited passage before you carry a figure, date or condition into your own work.

Should I use an AI tool that summarizes uploaded PDFs or one that finds research papers?

Choose by whether you already hold the papers. Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) answers only from documents you add, with citations, up to 50 sources per notebook on Standard. Elicit and Consensus search academic papers for you, more than 138 million and 220 million respectively, and extract or synthesize findings. A common split is to find papers in Elicit, then question the ones you keep in a notebook.
