Start by naming the missing piece: footage that was never filmed, a presenter you do not want to film, or an edit of a recording you already have. Runway generates Gen-4.5 clips of 2 to 10 seconds at 12 credits per second, so a 5-second take costs 60 credits and every retake costs the same again. Synthesia and HeyGen turn a script, slides or a document into a video read by a stock or custom AI avatar, which suits training, onboarding and explainers more than cinematic shots. Descript edits speech-led recordings by editing their transcript, and its allowance counts every minute you import or record, retakes and re-imports included.
Budget in the unit each tool bills. Runway Standard's 625 monthly credits cover about 52 seconds of Gen-4.5 video, or about three usable 5-second shots if each takes three attempts. Avatar tools bill finished minutes: Synthesia includes 10 minutes a month on every plan and then uses about 100 credits a minute, so Starter's 1,750 monthly credits add about 17 minutes, and HeyGen Creator's 600 credits cover about 19 minutes with the Avatar IV look at 31 credits a minute, or about 12 minutes with Avatar V. Descript Hobbyist's 10 media hours cover about 13 raw recordings of 45 minutes, and its AI credits are a separate pool for Studio Sound, Underlord, avatars and generated video.
Check the deliverable before the plan. Free video is watermarked on Runway, Descript and HeyGen, and Synthesia's free Basic plan cannot download videos at all. Runway Gen-4.5 renders at 720p, so its 4K is an upscale, and ProRes or PNG sequences need Max; Descript exports 4K on Creator and Business, HeyGen on Pro and higher. Existing videos can also be translated: HeyGen's lip-synced translation costs 6 credits a minute in Speed mode, and Synthesia's AI Dubbing works on every plan. Runway ties commercial use to your plan's terms, Synthesia's stock-avatar videos may not be used in paid advertising, and recognizable people, trademarks and footage you did not create need their own clearance.
Use the Runway profile for generated shots and footage cleanup, the Synthesia profile and the HeyGen profile for avatar-presented videos and translation, and the Descript profile for transcript-led editing. Synthesia vs HeyGen compares the two avatar platforms, and Runway vs Descript works through the billing and output differences with numbers. If the missing part of your project is narration, continue to audio tools.
Runway also generates speech from scripts through supported audio models. Choose Descript for transcript-led changes to an existing recording; voice generation alone does not separate these tools. Sources: Runway Generate Speech.

Task pages whose documented shortlist includes at least one tool from this category.
Our editorial judgement about what matters in this category, based on the plan structures we documented while building these profiles.
Generate when the footage was never filmed; edit when you already own the recording. Runway generates Gen-4.5 clips of 2 to 10 seconds at 12 credits per second, so a 5-second take costs 60 credits and each retake the same again. Descript edits speech-led recordings through their transcript and counts every minute you import. Synthesia and HeyGen suit a script that needs a presenter nobody filmed.
Runway Standard costs $12 a month billed annually ($15 monthly) for 625 credits, and Pro $28 for 2,250. Synthesia Starter is USD 14 a month billed yearly (USD 19 monthly) for US buyers, shown as EUR 12 and EUR 19 where Synthesia lists euros, and HeyGen Creator USD 24 billed yearly (USD 29 monthly). Descript prices per editor: Hobbyist $16 a month annually ($24 monthly), Creator $24 and Business $50.
On free plans, mostly yes. Runway Free and HeyGen Free watermark every video, and Descript Free exports 720p with a watermark. Synthesia Basic skips the watermark question by allowing no downloads, and the Synthesia logo stays until Starter. Runway Standard, Descript Hobbyist and HeyGen Creator are the first plans without a watermark.
At the Gen-4.5 base rate of 12 credits per second, Standard covers about 52 seconds a month, Pro about 187 seconds and Max about 790 seconds, roughly 13 minutes, before any retakes or extra output formats.
Yes, with an avatar tool. Synthesia imports .pptx slides as editable scenes and uses the speaker notes as the script; HeyGen converts PowerPoint or PDF decks, importing the first 50 slides per upload. Synthesia Pro's 6,500 monthly credits cover about 65 minutes of finished video on top of the 10 included.
Descript, because it edits speech through the transcript. Every plan transcribes 25 languages and labels eight or more speakers, and a Rooms recording is metered once for its length: a one-hour session with five guests uses 60 media minutes, not 300.
